Dash lights to LED

I want to replace my dash lights with red L.E.D.'s... now how many are in the gauges first? 9-right? and they are 194-right? Okay also I need to replace the bulbs in the HVAC/climate controls are they 194 also? How many?

I also need to replace the shifter indicator light and what kind of bulb is it? Lastly and most importantly how to I change the fog/defroster/hatch switches light to red to match all the gauges and such?

Re: Dash lights to LED

Ok thank you, I have already seen that, but that doesn't really answer my question... that lists both 194 and 161 for instrument-general, so what about the HVAC and the fog/defrost/hatch switch?? Also that doesn't list the shifter indicator

Re: Dash lights to LED

Well I did it to my gauges only. 9 bulbs all 194's.

The other stuff I'm not sure. I looked at the one inside the fog light console shining down and had no idea what it was and I've seen my share of light bulbs. I'd like to know as much you do since I have blue cluster lights and orange red HVAC controls and such.

Re: Dash lights to LED

Well actually they don't have to be leds... based on pictures I found I would rather go with colored glass bulbs than leds because it looks as if the leds don't light up the gauges evenly. I got into the hvac, shifter, and fog switches and such and the Hvac has three 74 bulbs and the shifter is one 74, and the switches have these really really small bulb behind them I haven't figured that out yet...

Re: Dash lights to LED

I did LEDS and it lit up fine. The trick is to get the 5 led wide angle leds. It has one strong LED in the center, and 4 smaller ones projecting in different angles to the side. VERY BRIGHT and have a great color. The whole gauge is lit up with no gaps.

Re: Dash lights to LED

sorry guys, been away for a few days. I'll post some pictures tonight once it gets dark. Day time pics are worthless, the camera will not even pick up the light in the gauges. Besides, unless you windows are limo tinted, no one turns on their dash lights during the day anyway.

Re: Dash lights to LED

Here you go. Actually, they about 10% brighter with the engine on, but its late and I don't need to wake the neighbors (loud car).

It doesn't look too bright in the picture, but I assure you they are in real life. My camera kills the brightness.

Hey AdmAnt13 where did you get the 5 point LED lights? I saw some on ebay but the ones that I saw were coming from Japan. If you could let me know where I would appreciate it, thanks!

Re: Dash lights to LED

Hey Thanks Krisb410!
Do you or anyone else know what the difference is between polarized and non-polarized? Some said that on them, just wondering.

Which ones did you buy, the ones with 5 leds? There are ones with 4 leds and 6 also would those fit too? Or would the ones with 5 be the best because of the way they spread?

Thanks!

Re: Dash lights to LED

Hey guys that bought the 5 leds from superbrightleds.com, were those just pop the old ones out and replace with these leds? No wiring or new conectors? Did you have to remove the cluster from dash or just the bezel and plastic lens cover? Let me know, thanks for the input so far.

The old one just come out and the new put pop in. No soldering, wiring..nothing.

How I did it was I took off the bezel and clear plastic till you can see the bulbs. The whole cluster does not have to come off. The only tricky part is pulling ou the old bulbs. They are recessed pretty far back. I used a needle nose to grab them and pull them out. Then did the same thing with the new leds to push them in. Thats it! Its pretty simple. I wouldn't worry too much.

No my car was off, on a list, getting its suspension upgraded at the time (was putting on bigger sway bars). I plugged in the battery JUST for that shot.

I was interested in doin this also... But my problem is my car is a 91' and has the yellow face lettering in the interior. I'd like to find some white faceplates for my car but i cant find any decent ones anywhere. Anyone know where I could find some?

Admant13: Off topic but i noticed your interior picture on your sig and saw your fourth gen console mated with the third gen dash... I was planning on doing that but I didn't wanna lose the dash because I love the way they appeal to the interior. How hard was it to get your console to mate up?

red def shows up better than blue. i've done light shows for bands and whatnot but we had incandescent bulbs; needed 5 blues to match the same effect as 2 reds.

Well heres the thing, 4th gen console match up ALOT better in Firebird/Trans Ams than in Camaro's. I haven't seen an install I liked yet into a third gen camaro. Basically the Radio pod portion is different from the Pontiac's which makes it incompatible...unless cutting is done and such. Don't get me wrong, it can be done..but not easily.

Re: Dash lights to LED

I just put in the White Face Gauge Overlays and the gauges now are white and look awesome. I want to change the bulbs to leds and according to what people have suggested I will go with the 5 leds that have the one bright in the middle and the 4 around I guess it has a wider span. Anyway I am now just trying to figure out the color led to put in. I saw the pics of the red ones but the pics seem to be with the origial black.

Does anyone have the white face gauge overlays and use color leds so that I know what they would look like with them? I saw the pics of them on the whitegauges.net but I wanted to see if that is really what they would look like. I was thinking about the white leds because I really like the look of the white gauges.

If anyone has these white overlays and leds let me know what they think or post pics if you have them, thanks!

Talk about resurrecting an old thread. I don't even drive my third gen daily anymore. Garage kept and used for shows. I have a 2001 WS6 to play around with these days.

Looked for you but didn't see that superbrightleds had a replacement for that. I would check eBay. They have LED circuit boards with an adapter that I know will work.

temper_loks I got a blue LED kit from autozone about a week ago for $15 that comes with adapters for the dome and tail lights. I'm at work for the next 36 hours so I cant give you the brand name of it beings the packaging is in the trash in my garage. It was with all the ***** ground effect lighting stuff. They come in red and blue.

Re: Dash lights to LED

Here is the packaging of the lights I'm using for my dome and trunk. I also have their pod lights for under the dash for floorboard lights. If I remember I will post a pic of the lights tonight.

I can't get the pic to show up. Here is thee link. Sorry.
