Re: Fabricate a glove box?

Its been a while but I think I remember seeing any aftermarket company(the paddock maybe) that sold a glove box that you just had to bolt and tap into where it actually should be.

I have seen a few fabricated but they didn't turn out to great but I'm sure if someone had the right idea to make it look factory it could turn out to be pretty nice.

Re: Fabricate a glove box?

there used to be a aftermarket company that used to make glove boxes can't remember the name though it would be next to impossible to find one though as I don't think many were made

Re: Fabricate a glove box?

Yep.....USED to be one that fit right in under the dash top, looked factory (basically) and you put the stock emblems on it, to make it look like it came that way.

I contacted Classic a couple of years ago & they no longer have it, nor can they even get it.

Just had a thought......I know a good vacuum form place, that did our signs. I wonder how hard it would be to build the forms to make these again? And would there even be enough interest to justify making some?
---------------------------------
From Classic Industries, but included with it was the instructions and the manufacturer's name. It's made by:

Aspect Auto
18807 NW Columbia St.
Portland, OR 97231
(503) 621-3324

Construction.. Vacu-formed plastic. It sounds "cheap" but it's fairly thick and well thought out. The body of the glove box is two moldings, making up the back of the box and the front. The seam isn't visible unless the passenger door is open. The door on the glove box is also two vac molded plastic pieces, with molded cup holders on the inside. The door is attached to the box with a metal piano hinge along the entire length of the door. The inside bottom of the box has a felt liner and a "bungee" strap in the back (kinda handy for holding owner's manuals, etc. in the box with the door open.) It' about as solid as the rest of the dash.

All in all it's not bad looking. The color is almost right (not quite as dark as the black dash, but not very noticeable.) The texture of the outside of the box is a dead ringer for the dash pad's fake grain. The latch is a simple black lever, mounted flush with the door of the glovebox.

To sum it up... it really does look like something GM would have made for the Camaro.. it fits and looks like the rest of the stock dash (even has a slight curve in the top to follow the contour of the dash pad.)

Tools required to install it.... a 7mm box wrench. (a little more if you want to transfer the "Z28", "IROC", or "CAMARO" logo from the dash to the door of the glove box... x-acto knife and bottle of super glue)

Installation:

1.) Remove the stock logo from the dash (even if you don't plan on putting it on the glove box, it needs to come off for the box to fit flush.) I pried it off with just a fingernail..it was held on with plastic tabs.

2.) Remove the four 7mm screws from the underside of the dash pad.. not the ones that hold the dash pad to the dash, but the four that secure the vent duct inside the dash.

3.) Use the four screws removed, along with the four fender washers provided with the glove box to attach it loosely under the dash. "Whaddayaknow.. they actually drilled the holes in the glovebox in the right spots..put the drill back in the tool box."

4.) Remove the backing from the double-sided tape on the back of the box and press it against the dash.

5.) Tighten the four screws in the top of the box.

6.) Go have a beer and admire your handiwork... you are done

I went ahead and glued the old dash "Camaro" logo to the lower right corner of the glove box door.. it's approx. the same position as the original location on the dash. A few dabs of super glue was all it took. (Use super glue in the center of the logo only and use it sparingly.. all super glues tend to leave a white residue on plastic if you go overboard and it squeezes out from around the edges of the logo)

Re: Fabricate a glove box?

I was just talking about the one from classic industries as to give him an idea of a way to start, that way it could help out on ideas and where to start on the fabricated one.
