LTX and LSXPutting LT1's, LS1's, and their variants into Third Gens is becoming more popular. This board is for those who are doing and have done the swaps so they can discuss all of their technical aspects, including repairs, swap info, and performance upgrades.

Are there any major differences between a LS1 and LS2 swap? I know that the LS2 is consdered Gen IV, but will I run into anything not mentioned in an LS1 swap thread?

The only problem i could see is the drive by wire, but wouldnt be hard to convert to that, or to just run a cable set up. Maybe someone else can jump in here for you.

Are the coil packs the same? Could I use ls2 coil packs on an Ls1? Is the wiring the same? And how about the hardware to mount them?
Yes, you can use LS2 coil packs on an LS1, and vice versa. Pretty much everything is interchangeable between all of the LSx series engines.
I'm even running the LS1 wiring harness (modified by Speartech) with LS1 PCM, coil packs, LS6 intake, LS1 fuel rails and accessories, etc. Basically, an LS2 block with worked LQ9 heads, everything else came off from an LS1 I have.
That's what's great about these engines - except for the LS7, everything else interchanges easily. GM designed it that way. LS1, LS6, LS2, LQ4, LQ9 - they are all basically identical except for a few minor differences.
the whole front assembly of the ls2 is different being that the ls2 crankbolt is about 2 inches longer the whole cam , timing and front side of the motor is different, from what i know that is the main change

While there are some changes in the OEM parts, you can still freely interchange LS1 and LS2 parts.
Beyond that, there still are no differences that one would have to worry about as far as swapping in an LS2 versus an LS1. If you are using a complete LS2 motor, just pretend it's an LS1 and you'll be all set, all the way up until you dyno tune it.
they are completely different animals with their own sets of issues.
both are very nice though and for the money ls1 is a gem.
Yea the LS1 is still going to be the better one for the money just because of the fact theres more of them and they are older. But still when it comes to swaping them in they are going to be pretty much the same.
The sensors are a little different compared to a ls1 to a ls2 but thats only a issue when your converting your ls1 to a ls2(or more common a 402 ls2), but if you already have a a ls2 harness to begin with then that should by pass all those problems.
Speartech already does a ls2 conversion wireing harness so there goes the problem with the harness, then after that everything is basicly the same as doing a ls1 swap, except for the drive by wire problem. But you can run corvette pedals for that or just convert it to a throttle cable set up.
So in the end the ls2 is of course going to cost more compared to a ls1 just because the motor costs more, but when comparing what needs to be done to get one in, there isn't much difference.

If you are building a custom longblock, the LS2 costs just about the same as the custom LS1 would. The LS1 is cheaper ONLY if you are getting a pullout motor and are doing a basic swap without modding the engine itself much.
In the end, the added cost of the LS2 is nearly negligible if you are doing more than just a stock engine swap, and installing it isn't going to present any problems the LS1 doesn't have.
