Re: notching k-member

No "exact" dimensions as there will be variances in each set up but this link has pics that should be enough to give you a good visual where to notch.

Re: notching k-member

thanks that helps but I hope someone has measurements when they did a 5.3 or a 6.0.. If not I'll just go by this. I really think there should be a tech sticky on this. Maybe a moderator can get one started.....

Re: notching k-member

This notch is only required to clear a stock LS1 F body A/C compressor. If your not running A/C you dont need to notch at all. There are brackets available for using your stock third gen compressor but its ugly as hell.

BTW all LS engines are the same physical size, 5.3, 6.0 etc etc. Its the accessory brackets, oil pans etc that change for each different donor vehicle.

I am planning on using a/c. I refuse to use the old compressor I've seen it it looks like crap. Too much going on at the top of the engine bay. I know they are all the same. The reason I stated the 5.3 and 6.0 is because I'm getting the 5.3 out a truck "using truck accessories" and an f-body pan. I was just thinking someone would have the measurements when they used this engine setup in their 3rd gen.

Re: notching k-member

To my knowledge no one has used the truck accessories with any success in a third gen. Your treading in dark waters now bud but someone has to be the first so when you figure it out post up your findings to help others. Good luck

Re: notching k-member

Only difference in the truck accessories and the LS1 is the placement of the alternator and P/S pump. The A/C compressor stays in the same place.

The alt in the stock truck location will not allow the hood to close.Believe me I tried. If you get it to fit I want pics. I have a 6.0L with fbody pan and accesories no ac with a stock k member and didnt cut a thing

With my 6.0L the distance from the front of the block to the serp. belt is longer than ls1.The water pump is longer and the inlet points in a different direction.

Did you use a stock hood? If so do you think it would fit under a cowl? I am using ac so I will need to cut the k member for that.

Re: notching k-member

It wouldnt fit under my cowl hood. It would fit if the cowl on the hood was three feet wide and six inches tall in the front. Just buy a tubular k-member with the mounts and get fbody acc. for the front of the motor. you will not have to cut a thing and the hood clearance wont be a issue. It will save you a lot of time and effort if you do it this way.

Re: notching k-member

Is the a/c compressor, alt, and power steering pump all the same part #'s on the three diff setups(f-body, corvette, truck)? If so then all I need is the brackets and the water pump. Maybe I can just get the one bracket on the driver's side and space it to make it even up with the truck acc. on the pass. side.... What you guys think?

Re: notching k-member

The truck water pump outlet points up at a 45* angle so if you get alt,p/s pump worked out the waterpump will be pointing above the rad. You need to buy a fbody w/p,fbody alt brkt, p/s pump bracket.I am not sure if the truck p/s pump itself is the same as the fbody pump.
I tried for weeks to get the truck stuff to work ( make brackets, idler pulleys, spacers, move alt to here, move p/s pump to there. finally got pissed went to the local gm dealer on a wed. and order less than $100 worth of brackets and bolts.By friday evening I had the acc. in the fbody location and the motor running while kicking myself in the a$$ for spending any amount of time scewing around with the truck acc. when people on this and other forums told me the same thing we are telling you! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE TRUCK ACC.
Just my .02 worth good luck

Re: notching k-member

I have a 6.0 in my 89 IROC with the truck brackets. I have it running, but it's like 6.LIROC-Z said, it won't even fit under a cowl hood. I think that the Jongbloed Hood looks like it's wide enough for the Alt. but looks like you'll have to do some cutting on the underside of the hood. So, it's f-body brackets for me too. But that means that I'll need a new intake and w/p. So right now I'm just running without a hood.

Re: notching k-member

I think I might be going with corvette brackets. little more expensive but it puts the alt above the power steering pump and I think the compressor is shorter so I might not have to notch my k-member. Can anyone verify this?

Re: notching k-member

The Corvette brackets bing the accessories closser to the block, so those brackets are going to push the ac comp. closser to the k-member. I'm not sure how much shorter the comp. is, but i bet it will still get into the k-member. I wonder how close it would be with the truck brackets and the Corvette comp. But then you'll have the issue with the alt. being to tall.

Re: notching k-member

the corvette compressor would not work with the truck acc.. would it? Are the corvette brackets closer than the f-body brackets?
