what shifter should should i buy? Help Please LS1 swap
I have a 1991 Irocz camaro that had an lS1 Engine / t56 Tranny swap from a 2004 GtO and the problem i am facing is the shifter is hitting my center console and i would like to get feedback from the experts. Before i invest in a shifter, what brand is the best that will fit my transmission, center the shifter where it needs to be so that i may finally cover that nasty hole with the shifter plate and boot? please help i got this car 4 months ago....

not sure which will fit as i am using a fourth gen counsel. where is it hitting at? sides? the actual counsel or the hole the shifter comes from.
some popular choices are pro 5.0 shifter and the hurst shifter. both sold at hawks

Re: what shifter should should i buy? Help Please LS1 swap
I traded my suzuki Motorcylce for my dream car...it already had the ls1 engine & t56 tranny swap from a 2004 gto but the guy didnt have the shifter plate/boot cover on becausethe shifter hits the back of the counsel on 2nd, 4th, & 6th gear on all the way to the right on Reverse....its really annoying and i hate drive my car with a big hole in my center counsel. you say have a 4th gen one installed, what year?

CONSOLE. You need to make sure you have the correct offset lever.
If you want a 4th gen console, anything 4th gen will work but because you have a Camaro, you will need to do some modifications to make it look good. Search...there are a good number of 4th gen console threads here.
As for shifters...I run a Pro 5.0 and I like it. However, had the MGW been out when I was shifter buying, I would have splurged on that instead. Its a nice piece. But you cant go wrong with either. Im not a B&M fan. Had one originally with the donor car...the Pro 5.0 was way better for me.

Ha! that makes alotta sense! this is my third fbody camaro and it struck me odd.... the vin pops up as an 1991 RS....so then the previous owner just got the body or decals from an irocz....Im slowly restoring this car from the crappy conversion they made.....How do you post pics? i just joined two days ago? I appreciate feed back from the experts im quickly learning and have loads of ideas just cash flow is limited lol

Yup change the shifter cup/lever to a 99-02 fbody on the trans itself. Then get a nice short shifter..mgw being the best out now but pricey..second runner up is the pro 5.0. I came close to grabbing a pro 5.0 when I first did my swap..then found out about the mgw and it will be the first and only shifter I buy in spring when the car is back on the road and I can adjust it properly.

hurst, hurst, hurst....haha, i like the classic look of the chrome shifter, it sits higher out of the console, and i can still shift by just moving my fingers. never used a pro 5.0, but i've had a hurst shifter in every standard tranny car i've owned.

I have read very good things about the MGW. It sits in a better location than any other shifter on the market. http://www.mgwltd.com/
My lesson learned is do not have anything shiny on the shift **** unless you like to burn your hand in the summer. A chrome rod can do the same thing if you are not careful.

Oh I learned the hard way as well. Needless to say the chrome handle came off that day.
I reccomend a pro 5.0 personally as I had a B&M before and it wasnt as nice as the pro 5.0

Re: what shifter should should i buy? Help Please LS1 swap
On thing I LOVE about my Pro 5.0...is being able to remove the dang shift handle. I hated that about the B&M. When I have to drop my trans, all I do is pull out the two bolts and remove the shifter handle. Leaves the low profile shifter base on there covering the hole.
The other plus to this is...Ive modified my shifter handle about 5 times since installing it. Ive cut off threads to make it shorter, and Ive put the whole thing in my press and gave it a compound bend. Its bent back and to the left pretty far. Im a tall guy, so this brought my shifter ball back to where its comfortable to me when just cruising. Still slams into gear fine when I need to be aggressive.
I know the MGS has a removable shift handle too. But its like a clamp fit, and Im not sure how much room there is to play with that. Might be even better if you can adjust its height on the fly.

Re: what shifter should should i buy? Help Please LS1 swap
I have the MGW and it only contacts the stock 3rd gen console in reverse. Not a big deal at all. Also, I accidentally ordered the 12MM handle instead of the 16mm one. Over a year later they sold me the correct handle and refunded me for the 12mm one after I sent it back.

Re: what shifter should should i buy? Help Please LS1 swap
not to sure if u have the situation resolved yet but thought i put my experience in
i too have the 04-06 gto t56
what u need is the 98-02 fbody shift lever to change the offset. the stock gto are 2in farther back. any gm/chevrolet dealer shift can order one for u bout $90(where i got mine). heres a pic what u need(sorry look but couldnt located a pn).once you have the part and istalled the shifter will now sit in the right location. u need the shorter one. after that is installed u can use any fbody 98-02 shifter u want. i have the mgw and no problems in any gear hitting the console.
