Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Hi,
I figured I would start a thread to post some pics of my disaster of a over my head build.
I got a crazy idea about a year ago at this point that I wanted to swap a LT1 into a third gen.
I found what I thought was a decent deal on Craigslist and brought it home.
It is a '86 Trans am w/ approximately 23K.
Previous owner swapped the engine, and trans long ago, and it has been sitting for since around '91.
What I already have done so far is:

Stripped the interior, and started repairing the small portions of surface rust.
I have a complete black interior already that will be going into it. I need to replace some of the pieces with better pieces still. I will collect them as I go.

I have a '96 LT1 shortblock that was rebuilt already specs as follows.
It is 355ci, Eagle cast crankshaft, reconditioned and resized LT1 rods with ARP bolts, Speed Pro forged pistons 4.030 bore, .002 main bearing clearance, and .002 rod bearing clearance, .024 and .026 ring gaps, Durabond cam bearings, Clevite P series main and rod bearings, Clevite freeze plugs.
I also have:
LE2 ported stock heads with beehive springs
LE ported intake
LE2 cam, old style, so its choppy
LS7 lifters
Pushrods
3/8 ARP rocker studs
1.6 self aligning Pro mag rockers
ARP head bolts
BBK 58mm throttle body
CRT black elbow
K&N cold air intake
A set of ford 30# SVO injectors

I have a rebuilt 4l60E trans to go in as well.
I have the Hawks cross member too.
I am just now ordering the gasket sets to finally start assembling the rest of the engine.
It will be slow as I am learning as I go, and I still need to pull the old engine and trans out.

I have a PSI wire harness with computer already as well.

I am still trying to decide what I want to do with the rear, as previous owner supposedly put 410's in it.

I am sorry if it seems like I am rambling on, but a lot of info I wanted to get out there. As I said at the beginning I have been slowly collecting all kinds of parts, and think I am finally able to start putting some stuff together.

Any info, tips, or questions feel free to post. Especially any tips.

Thanks,
I have a lot of photos sitting out on my dropbox folder that I will be uploading too.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

Anyone have some input on a rear? I was planning on going with a 98+ fourth gen rear. I have read though that they are relatively same strength.
I was figuring 98+ because of the shorter width then the earlier fourth gen rears. I know that I will need new wheels too.
The rear in the car seems to really need some work, and I figured it would be easier to just swap.
I am planning on changing out the fuel tank as well, so the rear will be dropping anyways.
I need to research the tanks better though, I know I read that one version has a filler neck that is easier to modify. I just don't remember which years.

I also just ordered the Herron performance billet oil pump drive housing. Figured since it was out.

Anything I am not thinking of that would be worth checking out?

Thanks for any input.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

Why swap rear ends? Both are the same if you use the 4th IIRC it will stick out about 1-2'' on both sides. You wont need new wheels to fit the 4th gen rear-end

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

Well I suppose I could always find a good third gen posi rear. I did see one in Craigslist for a decent price that had already been rebuilt. I am not sure if I want to deal, with the extra width.
That i suppose will be a decision made in the future.
I am not going to leave the stock rear just because I am not sure of the condition, and want to swap gears anyways.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

Well after work today, I started prepping the old engine to be pulled.
Drained all fluids, pulled all vacuum/coolant lines.
Got the header bolts all removed, and spark plugs.
Pulled the carb, and distributor.
Almost ready to pull the old out.
Uploaded a few more pics to my dropbox link.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

I was thinking about pulling the engine and trans separately. However after thinking about it I am leaning more towards pulling engine and trans as one.
I guess I will start working on the driveshaft and shifter linkage next. Since I think the engine is ready.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

Well not much done today. I pulled the shifter, and got the transmission drained. I got all of the exhaust off of the car now. Except for the headers. They are really wedged in there. They damaged the ac compressor housing with the headers I am guessing. I am guessing that I need to pull the engine and maneuver the headers out that way, or at least jack up the engine.

No new pictures today,as not really anything to look at.

However I did order neoprene, stainless brake line set, and a painless chassis wire harness. '

Can you guess which thread I have been reading....
I got lots of good ideas from "Project PITA" lots of good reading in there. Just what I needed lots of insight on things I want to do to mine. Obviously on a lot smaller scale.

Why did you decide to do the "painless" chassis harness ?

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

I decided while I have the interior stripped, and going to be running a new engine harness. I might as well fix all the hacked up wiring that the original owner had someone do.
They put a what I can figure a 70's era 350. They hacked the harness all up already, ran smaller wire than should have been, and had exposed wire at the butt splices.

The car has sat for around 20+ years ( I did catch one mouse inside of the car) and I was able to get it to start, and run rough. The windows weren't working, or lights.

He had a security system installed on the car as well that was pretty hacked up.

Just trying to head off any issues before they really become one.

You would really be a lot better off just getting the chassis harness from an 89-92 car and being done with it...

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap

Well I got put on hold by the government. Just kidding not a huge deal, I just haven't got the title transferred into my name yet. I called the dmv and the inspector said, I shouldn't go any farther until they inspect it and sign off so that I can get it transferred into my name.
So onto the 355.
I went ahead and added the oil filter adapter and oil pump plus gear onto the engine, with the cam installed.
I rechecked all my main caps torques. Then installed the water pump drive.
I then got stumped for a few minutes when I was trying to confirm which timing chain cover I needed to use.
I figured it out the newer one with the larger opti hole.
Started cleaning the cover up, and ran out of cleaner.
So figured it was time to quit for the night.
I posted another thread asking if I should use the oil cooler or not?
I am uploading a couple more pictures now too.
I did get my chassis harness in the mail today too.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Well was going to setup my timing chain, but ran into a problem.

The camshaft gear that I got with the kit, is for a electric water pump.

So, I decided to get a new LT1/LT4 heavy duty timing chain kit.
I also picked up a new water pump, and opti today.

So, I am on hold until Jegs can get me my timing chain kit.

Sounds just like my car! ...Almost exactly too.. the PO of mine decided that 14ga wire was plenty for the electric fan (surprised this thing didn't burn) needless to say, when i got it, I had a lot of harnesses to replace as well.

Good luck on finishing your build! I just started my LT1 Swap

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Today was a uneventful day, waiting on my timing chain.
I did get my billet oil pump drive installed. I had to use some Emory cloth, and slim it down some. Fits good now.
Other than that, I started cleaning up my intake cover, and the lifter hold down bracket. As well as some misc. small pieces.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Nope real easy. If you have the right stuff.
Threw it in the vice, grabbed a punch, knocked out the pin. Shaft came right out, and installed in the new.

Only issue I had was when I first tried it. It didn't fit. I had to sand it down slightly, but works great now.

I cleaned up some more misc. parts, like the accessory bracket, and few other small things.
Still waiting on the timing chain set, supposed to be here tomorrow.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Well I got my timing chain today.
Next problem arose though.
I need to find someone that can pull the old water pump gear off, and install the new gear.
So, just did a practice run fitting the timing chain together minus the water pump drive.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

MY LT1 build has been almost a 2 year project. Started out real slow by swapping tanks and installing a 4.11 rear,... but it got put into high gear once the car finally got painted last spring. Very similar to your build in that the entire car was stripped and it was completely re-wired during the build. A few things I'd recomend thinking about:

Fuel Lines
Power Steering Lines
Exhaust ( headers )
Third or 4th Gen Radiator
Fuel Pump
Cooling

Wiring,.....

Best advised to use as many stock thirdgen harness as you can. ( I've got some extra firebird wiring - worth mentioning) There are several wiring obsticals that you will need to overcome.

First; fuel pump. Unless your car was fuel injected it will not have electric fuel pump stuff. ( fuse/relay/pump) You might need to add a fuel pump into the tank,.... that would be a good time to install a rear end - even if it's not needed at this point. (98+ rears have a larger hub than 97 and older so some many factory GM wheels will need to have the inner hole ground down a little in order to fit. ) 4th gens rears ARE longer than 3rd gen rears so the wheels will stick out a little on each side ! I'd recomend a later ThirdGen fuel tank (90 + ?) because they had a in-tank Baffle that helps reduce fuel starvation in hard turns.

Electric fans. Again; unless your car had it,... it will all need to be addded.

If the car was a carb car than you will not have any 'injector' fuses in the fuse box. There is often times extra space in carb car fuse boxes to add additional fuses. Just be sure that the accessory being added gets power when it should ( hot at all times, 'keyed' or switched power, hot in run, ect...)

In my case; I pulled a underhood fuse box from a 4th gen and customized it to my needs ( 3 fan relays/fuse, 2 PCM fuses, Fog Light Relay and fuel pump relay/fuse. I also added a couple fuses to the factory Fusebox as well as splicing in a LT1 ALDL. All this tied in VERY NICELY to the factory LT1 engine harness and custom thirdgen C100 harness.

Also bear in mind that the LT1 PCM will need to be programmed. At the very least VATS will need to be disabled and any changes to the stock LT1 configuration should be adjusted as well.

You might find something in this post that might help in your build - Good Luck !!

Exhaust ( headers ) I was thinking of going with Dyno Dons, then a custom from there out.
Third or 4th Gen Radiator / was definately planning on swapping that as the one in it sat for way too long, with coolant in it.
Fuel Pump / It was Fuel injected already, but was going to go with a newer fuel tank (98+ 4th gen)
Cooling / it does have electric fans, but again was probably going to fab in some newer ones.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Managed to get the timing chain all together. The water pump drive gear, I was able to get a service guy at a Chevy dealer to swap for me.
Got the opti on. I stopped there and decided to get a new harmonic balancer. I didn't like the way the old one looked, and was starting to fit on.
Got the harmonic balancer on, and the oil pan.
I also started cleaning up the LE2 heads, needed some gasket surfaces cleaned, and overall cleaned up.
I still need to get my intake powder coated, and paint the heads, but seems to be coming together now.
Still waiting on the inspector for the title though.
No more pics tonight will get them up later though

Sounds like a fun project. I'm in the middle of an lt1/t56 swap having lots of fun getting these things figured out. I swapped in a rear end from a 2000 TA with disc brakes into my 91 Z and I love it. The wheels do stick out about 2 " but I'm not having any clearance issues But i have aftermarket 17's with low pro tires , i think the factory rims would rub on the brakes though. Have fun with that project and keep the posts coming especially when you get to the LT1 install. I'm going to start tackling the wiring next week. Should be fun

I had my stock rims on for 6 months after my rear end swap. No clearance issues.

Re: Very long but eventual LT1 swap/plus complete interior update

Well, I cleaned up the garage again, and put all my tools away.
I decided I am going to send the heads back to Lloyd Elliot to refresh the heads, and do whatever needs to make sure they are good to go.
I am still looking for a powder coater as well for the intake.

I added a few more pics as well, and rearranged the pictures.
