91 Z28 New Paint

Got the Z28 painted this winter. The body was 100% rust free. It had a few minor dings and paint chips. Most of the paint was still original, the passenger side door had been painted at some time and the drivers side front fender had some paint touch up. The paint turned out great. A few pics before it was painted.

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

Some pics of it being painted. A paintless dent guy took out the dings so there was very little body work needed.

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

The original hood blister inserts couldn't be removed for paint without being damaged.

[IMG][/IMG]

Found some carbon fiber decals on ebay to replace the original inserts. I prefer the stock look but these aren't bad especially for only $10. The quality was actually pretty good.

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

The original plan was to install heritage stripes on the car. The install didn't go well. The company that installed the stripes botched the job and scratched the paint up pretty bad. There is another thread on here about the stripes. Here are a couple of pics with the stripes.

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

I removed the decals because the paint had to be buffed out and the quality of installation wasn't good. That's why the blisters are black. The black blisters have grown on me, I actually like the look. I picked up another set of blisters to paint white for the stock look if I want to go back that way.

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

Have a few more pictures but photobucket seems to be down now. Overall I'm very happy with the paint, the shop I used did a great job and got it done quickly. I got new emblems and door seals as well.

Your Z looks great! The black hood blisters give it an iroc vibe which I personally like. Can you elaborate on the paint, single stage/base-clear?

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

Love the look of the car, but can't get over how the black blisters don't "fit" with it. Just looks like you forgot something. I think you need to paint them back to white, or have someone else put your stripes on for you.

I love the wheels

Thanks for the input, I definitely respect your opinion. You have one of the nicest cars on the board.

I felt that way at first but once I got used to it I started to like it. When the car was sitting in the garage and I was looking at it from close up I didn't like the black blisters. But once I got it outside and could look at it from a distance I liked it more. Right now I don't want to touch the paint since its looks so good. I may paint the stripes on later if I want to go that route. I picked up an extra set of blisters and they are at the body shop now to get painted white with the same batch of paint. That way I can go with either look. I like it for something different right now but may swap them back to white.

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

From what I can see (would like to see a side shot looking down a little so I can see the blisters better) I like the black blisters .I think it gives it a more aggressive look and complements the black buckets, black grill, and even the black tires. Nice looking wheels also, they look really good. (smart move with being able to switch from black to white and back again when you want to )

This is probably the best shot looking down on the car.

Nice car! The black hood scoops are nice. It was excellent with the stripes though! That's one of my favorite 91-92 Z28 combos.

Thanks! Your car is one of my favorites on the board, those wheels are amazing. White wasn't one of my favorite colors for a thirdgen until I saw yours.

You should paint the bowtie on the grill white or paint it all white with a black bowtie....

Car looks beautiful... you said you had original paint. Did they repaint the whole car, or just the areas that needed repaint? I ask as I have a 20k mile car on original paint but the GFX are fading at a different rate than the body shell; they look good but to be perfect, need a repaint. Just wondering if you had the whole thing done or just parts that needed it...

Also, what are you doing for your stance? Is it lowered, and if so, what springs/suspension bits do you have?

Thanks for the comments. Painted the whole car, but didn't do the door jams or engine bay they didn't really need it. You would have to look very close to even notice. Some places in the door jams had some yellowing but most of it rubbed out with some polishing compound, so you really have to look close to notice they weren't painted. I may paint the engine bay when I pull the engine, although its pretty clean too.

A good body shop should be able to paint your ground effects and match it up well especially if the factory paint on the body is in good condition. Just be careful about who you chose to do the work. Its pretty difficult to match 20+ year old factory paint. The only way to make it match perfect of course would be to paint the whole car.

The car is lowered on stock cut springs. Front springs have 1/2 coil cut off and the rears have about 1/4-1/2 a coil cut off with the rear isolators removed. Also have tubular LCA's, adjustable panhard bar, and koni yellow shocks/struts. Its a very simple setup but handles very well for what it is.

When I had the heritage stripes on it they were on the deck lid and spoiler. Now only the hood blisters are black.

Beautiful car!! I really liked it with the stripes. The black blisters look great also! They match the headlight buckets. I would put the stripes back on if you can.

I love this car. I just picked up a 92 z28 vert - white with a black roof. I already bought a second set of hood blisters to do in satin black - to match the headlight buckets.

Can you tell me the specs on your wheels / tires?

Thanks,

George

Can you tell me the specs on your wheels / tires?

Thanks,

Re: 91 Z28 New Paint

Would please tell us how much total to have the paint done. That gives us some idea as to what a quality paint job may cost.
Beautiful car.

Beautiful car.
Thanks for the comments. It cost about $5200 for the paint job, which is pretty reasonable for a show quality paint job. Keep in mind too this car had no rust and needed very little body work. They used a paintless dent guy to get out the small dings it had in the hood and doors. Body work can really add up if you start out with a car that has rust and/or body damage.

That sounds about right. I only played $3,000.00 also using PPG B/C but it was done by a friend. (A professional painter)

He did say he would usually charge $5,000.00 for what I had done.
