Anyone here near College Park, MD?

I just moved here in November and i've seen a few nice thirdgens in the area, just wondering if they belong to any of you guys.
I know 83CrossfireTA is real close, but I haven't met him yet. Anyone else?

Welcome to the traffic nightmare of the east coast. There is a huge gathering in Ocean City that you absolutly can't miss. As it gets warmer, you will see posts about more local meets.

eh the 355 meet kinda sucks. only reason i go is cause i live right up the street and have a lot of friends who go there. probably not worth it to come from more than 20 minutes away. sometimes there isnt even anyone there at all.

We should try to get a big car show going this summer. I don't think we should keep it just third gens, because then it may not have that good of a turn out, maybe all domestics or even leave it open for everybody. But it would be sweet to have a car show organized by third gen folk.

Okay. When + where? Probably sometime when it hits 70* again this winter.

I'm okay with having a domestic car show in the area. As with most, though, it would likely be 95% old muscle cars.

I know College Park well, but haven't visited the area in a very long time. I would like to get the gang together again in Rockville for an f-body gathering. Also, every month another board gets together in Virginia -- this month we're heading to the Auto Show in DC (Jan 27th) -- but I think the b/f wants to go to the show so I may not make it until the 28th. Rumor has it that the new Camaro will be there...I've got my fingers crossed.

ZZ4 - do you think we could get one scheduled around April for the first Rockville gathering of the year at CiCi's like we did last year? All cars welcome?

By the way -- I would absolutely love to drool over your twin turbo L98 T56...how do you keep it under 55? LOL!

You're right - it has been a while. My computer crashed a while back and I lost all my favorites -- I'm back on most now, but had forgotten about thirdgen.org until someone on Motortopia reminded - my bad!

And YES, I do have something new. I got a wrecked '99 Camaro 6-cylinder a few months back as a daily driver, but it just doesn't have enough zoom-zoom for me - about three weeks ago I found a salvage '00 Trans Am w/LS1 6-speed...so I bought it. It should be out of the shop at the end of the week. You can see picks of both cars on. I don't have any pics of the Camaro repaired, but I just happened to have a passenger door at the shop, so it was an easy fix for me -- b/f wouldn't agree, he had to weld the entire area under the passenger seat, lol. He tells me the new car will be my favorite -- but I don't think so. I love my purple car, and my T/A vert with the flags, and....oh, well -- I think you get the picture, lol!

I wouldn't mind meeting up on Saturday afternoon even if it's a bit chilly out as long as we don't spend a lot of time outside...I hate the cold. I'll keep checking - you guys keep me posted. I'll see if I can get any interest on the other boards once we have a date and time.

Laurie.

Hey, Steve -- yeah, since I missed you in OC, that would be great. I don't know what time on Sunday, but if you want I could give you a call before we leave - just PM me your cell number.

And, yes, I got the nose fixed. She's back to beautiful - and now the Ford Girl Gone Bad across the front is in silver. It looks much better than the black did. I did some mods this summer - added a 4:10 rear, posi, ignition coil, a couple of other little things but I don't remember what right now. The 4:10 rear is something else - that baby hits 2nd and I get whiplash, lol.

I'm up in Ellicott City. Nice to see some other third genners in the area. Mine will be in the garage for a while. It needs a lot of work and I don't like to work on it in the cold weather. Getting ready for some meets/shows would motivate me to get it done sooner!

What time is the random board in VA going to the DC show? Heh. I do want to go if not just to see the Camaro. Meeting up with other car people would definitely make it worth $8 (with my IRR military ID).

I wouldn't mind some drool around the IROC, just please refrain from drooling on the IROC.
What is this "keep it under 55" you speak of?

Hey, Stevo - called and left a message on your cell Sunday morning, but no answer. It was incredibly crowded at the show, but well worth it just to see the fifth gen Camaro!

I am so sorry Laurie!, i got your message and i meant to call you but i just got completely side tracked once i got in D.C...very hectic trying to find parking then getting into the place was insane...very very packed this year. I must say that new camaro looks awesome in person. Ill be honest i didnt really like it too much from the pictures but it looks aggressive, mean, and just badass in person. IRS, True Duals...kinda sweet on a camaro.

i was down there a couple of weeks ago picking up a car, and i think 55 is merely a suggestion!

i was doing 60 pulling an empty trailer, and was being passed like i was standing still. same thing while coming back with the car loaded up.

You're a hazard on the road if you are doing 55 on the beltway. lol. Seriously people passing in the right lanes, soccer moms and amigos with 6 packed in the left lane, MD tags not using turn signals driving 80 around everyone, asians in lexus's on cell phones. I hate the beltway yet i have to travel it everyday...

Re: Anyone here near College Park, MD?

Hey, I'm right across the beltway from there, pretty much. I haven't heard of any meets there, but I could be just missing something.

My IROC still sits under its cover as it has for the last year and a half. It won't 'legally' pass inspection, and I have too many projects to do anything about it anyway. :/ If I had to get rid of everything else, it would still be the one to stay, though.

If there are any meets this summer I'd be glad to come hang out with any of my other legal vehicles, however.
Heck, I'll host a BBQ in my backyard if anyone's up for it. Anyone?

Re: Anyone here near College Park, MD?

Huh, actually, that wouldn’t be a bad place to get together since it’s right off of where the beltway/95 cross. I’m actually just under 10 miles north of there in laurel.

You know, there really isn’t a regular get together anyplace around the area. There used to be a regular weekend night informal “car show” at the tastyfreeze in laurel on rt 1, but that somewhat died out and then the tastyfreeze closed.

There’s a regular Sunday morning thing in Burtonsville, at the amish market (I know, weird) on the corner of 198 and rt29, but to be honest, I’ve never made that one (If I’m going to be up early on a Sunday, it’s not voluntarily, so I’ve driven by but never gone there.

There’s a Saturday afternoon thing in Glen burnie, but that seems to move around some and I don’t know if it’s going on this year, but that has been huge at times.

Getting further out, there’s a regular Saturday afternoon carshow in Olney (Olney plaza, if you know the area there’s a bunch of them in a row, it’s the one with the movie theater and BJ Pumpernickles in it), it’s small but it’s regular. There’s always a few people there that I know from the speed shop that I used to work at.

Out on Rockville pike, they’ve been trying to start a regular get together on Saturdays at 3 brothers, but that has pretty much sucked and last I heard.

There’s the Jimmy cone cruise in Mt Airy, but that’s way out of the way and it happens every other Saturday or something like that.

The only heavily f-body one that I know of is the lowes cruise in that is mentioned on this board, but it’s far enough out of the way that I’ve never gone and have no idea how well it goes.

All that being said, I’d be game for a local get together, and I could actually drag a street legal 3rd gen to it (that’s really ratty on the outside and disassembled inside), or my 4th gen, that is mostly in good shape (for a daily driver), though the last few times it’s been the wife’s sunfire (or the truck when it’s running) because that’s the only one that I can bring the dog in easily and If I’m going to be hanging out outside I’d rather bring her along than leave her home, usually she’s quite good but we noticed at the last car show she was at we noticed that for some reason she’s decided that she likes to lick chrome, which is a bit of a problem…

Re: Anyone here near College Park, MD?

Wait a minute… what’s the problem with street legal 3rd gens? For almost 2 years they you’ve been able to register a 20 year old car as a classic, so as long as it’s a 88 or older, register it as a classic and you’ll get tags without any inspection… that’s pretty much the only way my ’87 is legal…

With Chevy bringing the Camaro nameplate back out, we'll have to wait until our cars are 25 years old until we can get "Historic" or "Street Rod" tags.

Re: Anyone here near College Park, MD?

A get together would encourage me to drive my car. It sits most of the time, its not that road worthy and race gas is pretty expensive in a street driven car but i would make the trip out to college park, its right around the beltway. Then again my car is a little ruff in spots so i'm kinda self conscious about it.

Re: Anyone here near College Park, MD?

Beginning in 2007, Maryland changed the law so that any car 20 years old or more can get 'historic' tags (with the associated restrictions), regardless of whether or not the nameplate is still used. If that law holds until mine is that old remains to be seen, but that is how it currently sits.

Stevo, don't feel bad. "90 IROC-Z twin-turbo 350 6-speed" sounds real good on paper and may even look decent in pictures, but it's not exactly show quality, or even driveable (legally or reliably).
I'd like to see yours regardless of condition.

Thirdgens are definitely a rare sight on the roads anymore, I wouldn't mind drooling over a few more.

toxik IROC, why'd you edit your posts? It makes mine look kinda , heh.
