WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

So I would like to test the waters here and see who might be interested in a weekend get-together up here in Lassen County. I am thinking some time late next spring when all the snow melts away and the roads are clear. There are several different drives up here that can range from 2 to 8 hours, and take you through some of the most amazing country and mountain roads in Ca. The local cruise scene can be a bit of a drag, but we do have a main street and I could probably get enough notice out for a descent cruise night or two. A good friend, and fellow third gen owner, works at a local casino/hotel and is willing to look into getting good deals for us on rooms, he just needs a rough idea of how many. I am going to shoot for an extended weekend, like a four day, three night deal. Like I said though just wanted to throw the general idea out there and see how many would be interested. If there are a few or more interested I will get the ball rolling on putting it all together.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

I'd be interested in a weekend getaway up that way in the spring.
Casino/hotel idea sounds cool, probably just 1-night however for me.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

Well, four days three nights may be a bit much so probably just two nights. Like a drive up Friday evening, stay Saturday, and head home Sunday morning. I'm just thinking that most won't want to drive 4 hours here, then go immediately for another 4 hour drive, and turn around the next morning and drive 4 hours home. But that is why I am posting this thread, just to get a little feedback and see what people think.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

I'd be interested, but I dont have a 3rd Gen All I have is my Escort and I dont want an eyesore in the middle of all them 3rd Gen works of art.
Redding is only 90 minutes from me and Lassen isnt too far east of Redding. Will it be before or after Kool April Nights in Redding?

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

It's going to be after Kool April Nights in Redding, mostly because getting here involves going over some high elevation mountain passes. I'm thinking more along the lines of mid June now because I want to make sure that the roads we will all be driving will be free of snow and ice, as well as have all of the cinder rock they (cal-trans) uses cleaned off.

As far as rooms go, there are cheaper rooms available in town (around $40, or less). But if you are really considering sleeping in your cars, I can lend some living room floor space for sleeping bags. At least you will be able to lay out, and your cars will be safe in my neighborhood.
----------
BTW, I usually attend the Kool April Nights show in Redding, it would be sweet to meet up there too if some of you guys go that way too.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

Ok guys, just a little update. I talked to a local diner here in town that is usually very welcoming to group meets, and they are more than happy to work with us for a meal or two. The manager said they might even be able to post a pic or two of our rides on the walls. Food there is descent, roughly Denny's quality or a little better. My wife and I were also talking about having a barbeque at our house as well.

Still trying to decide on a cruise though. My original idea is to drive through the Lassen Volcanic National Park. While it is an awesome drive, the road time is about 4 hours (I'm going to drive it when the snow melts to be sure), and there are many places to stop for photo ops and sight seeing.

Another thought would be a night in Reno. I might be able to get it set up on a night they will be running drag races in Fallon, about 20 min or so from Reno. Of course that could include all kinds of good food, drinking, gambling, and just about anything else you could think of. If it was to be on a week night we could get rooms at just about any casino for less than 40 per night.

I realize this will be quite a drive for some of you, so I am trying to make sure we all get as much out of a weekend as we can. I would appreciate any and all feedback, thanks guys.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

That's quite a drive for Lenny's quality hmmm...

If you throw in a killer cruise and a meet / BBQ, that sounds better to me.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

Yeah, that is a long way for Lenny's, but they are an easy meeting place. A BBQ would be a must, but we could also hit one of a few great burger places or a killer hole in the wall pizza place. Dates will be determined by weather, I want to make sure the park is completely clear before we take a bunch of f-bodys through. Lassen gets a ton of snow in the winter, and I know a lot of you guys might not be comfortable in the snow and ice. If you guys want a killer drive (and a BBQ), I'll make it happen.

BTW, I hope no one minds the presence of a 4th gen. I may not be able to talk my wife into riding with me in the Z28, and she may insist on driving her '94 Formula.

Gottcha, no she likes my Camaros just fine it's just that she loves her Formula and loves to drive it. I have talked with her quite a bit about this meet and she is really looking forward to it and will be helping me organize it. She even want to put a new exhaust on her car before the meet. Can't blame her, I would want to drive my own too.

I am pretty sure the entire trip from my town, through the park, and back to town is less than 200 miles. That is why I am going to drive it myself once the snow is gone, just so everyone knows what to prepair for. There is a gas station about 50 miles out right before we enter the park, then a few about 15 miles after we exit the park and about 50 from town again. I am not sure the actual distance through the park, but I am pretty sure it is about 60 miles. It will only be the first 50 miles or so that we can even drive 65 mph, the rest of it will be 55 or lower. Again, I will clock it all out in my car and post the actual distances and times before we do this.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

Yeah bully, those are some fun roads to drive though. They are a bit dangerous so you've got to be careful, but they can be a lot of fun. I've got a brother that lives down in Chico so I get to make that drive every now and then, beautiful too.

The LS engine should be able to do the entire cruise with a considerable ammount of fuel left over. Unless of course you have some way wicked internal mods.

I hope I will be able to make the cruise. I know city driving I get 100 miles to a tank but that is all city + warming up my car... When I went to sac, not exactly babying it, I got about 230 Miles to a tank.

Actually my buddies Trans Am should be running, so he would probably come with me.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

we can also group up in sac and drive together. I would probably come up on the friday and drive on saturday. 8 hours is a long haul in one day. Maybe see if i can take off all day friday and go chill up there. My roc is still a little shaky now, but i should have it cleaned up nice by the time we go to do this.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

that's kind of my idea, have everyone gather on like a friday evening for a BBQ and some chill time. Then Saturday would be the cruise through the park, and those who wanted or could stay another night would drive home Sunday. It would help to break up the hours in the car.

I think that's a given, just like if I drive to a coastal town I cannot leave until I go to the beach.

I'm not certain of the dates yet, probably the beginning of June though. I want to make sure all of the roads we will be driving will be clear of snow and cinder rock before we all take or beloved rides out there. I will post details and such on this thread as the time come closer, and I will try to give everyone enought time to get time off from work if needed.

I know a guy. It will cost $200, then whatever the smog charge is. I went through him about 3 weeks ago. Got my nice shiny 2010 Sticker 2 weeks ago!

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

Just an update. If anyone has been watching the weather lately, you've been able to see that we've been getting some really good snowfall up in the northeastern mountains. While this means great news for the summer season, and even the ski/snowboard masses, it does seem like it may push back our drive dates even further. I have seen the snow pack last all year long and still have several feet left over before the next winter sets in. Because the national parks rely on tourism to help make their money they do a great job of keeping roadways clear, but we may end up driving through snow berms quite taller than our cars in the highest of elevations. If this looks to be the case and too many people are nervous about driving with roads like this, I can look into other routes we can take. As stated before; once these roadways are drivable again I will be driving them regularly myself to ensure my ability to inform you all of the road conditions.

Re: WAY up Nor-Cal GTG!

I'm waiting to see what the rest of the winter/spring does around here before I set up solid dates, but I will be posting here as soon as I have any idea. I'll also try to send out PM's to the ones who express interest in making the trip.
