My car has not moved since November. Nothing crazy planed for it, just installing the new red powter coated rear callipers and redoing the parking brake cables. Most importantly though, I need to get a good tune on my car for spring.

What do you consider breaking the bank?

Jimmy's Transmissions in Mundelein will give you a fully rebuilt monster with a 9.5" vig for about $1800 I think. I believe that includes installation too. Its a steal at that price considering the Vig is about $800 on its own. He's got a proven track record, in fact Our fearless Mod 3.8TransAm has a Jimmy's trans in EVERY firebird he owns.

Steering rebuild, oh yes, this is on my plans too. I plan to do everything, including Lower control arms, and the strut towers as well. The car corners flat and stable but the play in the steering drives me nuts. Must get rid of it.

Projects on the table are Rebuild the front end, install the T56, and do the heads/cam on the car too.

if your budget is a grand then it's th350/400 time then if you plan on racing it a lot, it's a much stouter trans. Plus not as large a 1-2 gear ratio drop either so it'll be faster.

Re: winter projects. what's everyone working on

I bought a GTA at the end of fall and drove it for@ 60 miles. So far I put in a new rearend, ls1 brakes all the way around and umi subframe connectors. I decided to pull the top end off to polish everything for next spring but now its turned into swapping the 350 for a 385. Hopefully itll all be done in a month or two and I can move on to a spring project ,, maybe a new trans.

Re: winter projects. what's everyone working on

It's been a good winter so far. Here where I am at on my cars.

86-Finally got my 86 back to the point where I can drive it on a daily basis after two years. Got it tuned up and wired proeprly. Cheaper paint coming during the spring, just to get rid of the flat black look. Plan to get the locks all working with the same key since I have different doors than the originals.

92 - She has been giving me a few more problems than normal. The big repair was replacing the fuel pump. This was a long time coming and I was about 125 miles from home and she started really acting up. got her home and started the swap. Also at the same time I had a cracked distributor cap (don't ask 'cause I don't knw how), bad roter and wet plugs. Changed the fuel filter and float too. Sending unit and fuel relay were good. Boging problem solved and car runs wirth much more authority. Wife drove car one day and I get in and the turn sigal was broken. Had Denny swap me in a new steering column and leather wrapped steering wheel so I consider that an upgrade. But now I have more slop in my turns so I will have to deal with that before the spring driving season. I am going to need new tires and would like to change my shacks / struts to. Came out to the car after the wife drove and the drivers lock cylinder was turned around and now can't lock the door. Of course much like the turn signal she has no idea what happened. So I will be taking door panels off soon. Painting front ground effect but that happens every year so no big deal. Going to have to stop the wife from driving.

88- Just bought this car, well actually making final payments while car is in storage. Seems to be a pretty straight car. Can't wait until April to drive and see what she has. Neverowned an IROC so that will be fun. The convert just adds.

spending a lot of moneY this year on my cars but it should be a fun summer with three third gens in the driveway. Can't wait for the Thirdgen Fest.

maybe this should be another tread but my trans guys who races(7 and 8 second) cars says the 1-2 shift thing is nonsense when i approached him about swapping to a 200 trans. he said with a loose enough stall the ratio drop from 1-2 wont matter and its the same drop as in a powerglide..anyone care to shed light either way? i dont know, all i know is he thundes down the track with 1200 hp at 7 seconds and 200 mph so i tend to beleive him.

Re: winter projects. what's everyone working on

I'm planning on putting on a pair of Alstons SFC and a wonder bar. Also I have a set of vortec heads that should wake up my tired 350. As for a trany shop, I just got a rebuilt 4L60e for my truck from Shift Rite out of Kankakee. He has REALLY good prices, but I think he's a newer company so it might be out of the picture for you.

Got the 350/TH350 swap done and just got the Posi and 4.10 gears put in yesterday and it started snowing so I started breaking the gears in on jack stands. The wires on the left side by the fuel pressure regulator on the engine picture are for the remote starter solenoid that should be here in the morning. I'm so ready for spring!

Yes on most low HP cars the ratio does matter, and it will show up on your timeslip. A powerglide goes from 1.76 to 1.0(.76 drop) and that is your only shift. For most big HP cars that allows you to take away some of the hit off the line if traction isnt' there. Certainly not the case for lower hp street cars. The 700r4 drops from 3.06 to 1.6 for a drop of 1.43. Finally the th350 is 2.52 to 1.52 or a drop of 1.0. If your stalls keep you near peak torque the extra 500+rpm drop off the 700r4 will take you out of that sweet spot until the rpms raise back up.

Re: winter projects. what's everyone working on

usually a big HP car needs to take some of the hit away from the launch to get out of the hole without the nose just hitting the sky, most cars running 10s or slower don't have this issue. Usually a glide is for high hp ie 1000+ cars although on some they can still run the same ET from around the mid 10 point with a glide and a 3 speed. Regardless a 700R4 will no live behind a 7k+ rpm motor for long at all, most ls1 guys are freshening their 4L60e a time or two each season to keep them together.

I have been doing a 350 swap, repainted engine compartment, weather striping, new springs, struts, shocks, sfc, and swaped in gta seats. Might try for new paint depending on how work goes.

The full kit from ebmiller is close to a grand. I got a lightly used kit from a member for $500. If someone was up to fabing the stuff themselves, not to bad of a job, you could probally do it for $300
heres a great link http://www.team3rdgen.com/modules.php?name=LS1Brakes

Been working on incorporating "real fire" into our powder process......and along with that I am going to try and work some of the flames into the new hood design and on the scoop. Also hope to have the 39 Plymouth truck up and running by summer.

here is the new hood design lol...

scratched and clawed ,did all the work myself and searched ebay high/low. bought brackets from eb(best guy out there period, any brake stuff you go to eb period) then found a set of calipers on ebay. cleaned them up,got new gm selas, rebuilt them (4 0 rings big deal) and took out the hacksaw and tap. easy swap.
talk to eb,if i recall i think you can use stock lines but not sure.i got earls anyways. the hub you need but you dont. technically you have the hubs, its your rotor. if you have a lathe or a decent machine shop just mill the rotor off. gets some pads and rotors for an ls1 and your mobile. its so easy youll wonder why you didnt before. only thing is most folk wont have to worry but it pushes wheels out about 3/10" so if yo have a big tire with really close fit keep it in mind. also ask eb or check the forums,i think youll need 16" rims for the ls1 swap.

I called eb and he told me the gta crosslace wheels had to be spaced out, iirc 5/16". With a spacer is a good idea to put extended studs in the hub.
