Scca???

i was originally thinking about building my car up for drag racing but after thinking about it a little more i was considering doing autocross or the SCCA racing set up with my car, i thought it would be a little more interesting, not to dog on drag racing which is still awesome, just something different. id like to hear from anyone who does this racing and how to these thirdgen's hold up?

They're 1 of the best cars for autocrossing ever while being great for drag racing also. Do a search on this board and read up.

turning is lots o fun and as above, 3rd gens can be great autox cars. There are many different classes that correspond with your mods or lack thereof.

The 2002 SCCA F-Stock Solo II National Champion car was an 89 IROC. The 2002 SCCA E-Street Prepared Solo II National Champion car was an 82 Z28.

That should give you an idea of the potential that a 3rd gen has.

I doubt that the car that you've seen is either of the national champion's cars. They are both out of PA. Unless of course you saw them when they were in Topeka for the nationals.

Here are links to the Nationals results for F-Stock and E-Street Prepared. Scan the entries - the 3rd gens are still very active and very strong.

That might be Mark and Jean Alft's car. I know they run a blue 3rd gen in FS. They also own Solotime, which sells magnetics and other autocross-related stuff.

There's a good synopsis of most of the Solo II rules here:

http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/

It just doesn't have the Prepared and Modified rules.

IROCBandit, I race my car, and it holds it's own in the street prepared category... if the fast guys drive it. The thirdgen suspension setup is very good, which is why the Mustang guys switch to a suspension setup like ours (torque arm, panhard bar, lower control arms) instead of their 4-link.

KeithO, do you race with a guy that owns a burgundy Talon? License plate 'T2SMALL'? He was up here for a visit, and took his car out to our auto-x. Did pretty well too.

That blue IROC you see in Wichita has been a National Champion twice. The owners of that car are Mark and Jean Alft. Jean has been a two time womens national F-Stock chanpion. 1994 and 99 I think. They are also the owners of Solotime.

Alex,

There have been 4 talons locally over the last 2 seasons. One guy was a newbie for 2002, but improved nicely. Another was a black talon that the guy sold halfway through 2002 to buy a Z06 Vette. That guy can drive. Another is a gray heavily modified AWD talon that is often an FTD contender. The final one didn't show up in 2002, but in 2001 ran mid-pack in ESP. ESP locally is brutal so he had to be decent to run mid-pack.

The last guy may have been the one you are referring to. Also, there are quite a few serious guys from this area that borrow cars and go to events across North America for the hell of it. It's sometime hard to match cars to drivers around here because they swap them like socks...
