Steel shim gaskets worth .2 ?

Went to the track last Sun. first time driving since July 11th. Had a cracked exhaust port on my Dart blems, replaced the head and changed to G.M. .022 steel shim head gaskests I've had for 25 years. My son-in-law drove 2 weeks ago and netted 2.5 tenths, I was hoping for the same. I only netted .2, best time now stands at 7.093 @ 102.98. Didn't gain any mph at all. I would have thought I'd gained a little mph also. The temp was still in the very high 80s, 89 and 48 percent humidity. Maybe it'll run a little quicker when it cools off some more. 1st run was a 454 69 Nova, his dial was a 6.54, mine a 7.09, I had him by 4 cars, let off an hit the brakes. He nipped my at the light by .007 for the WIN, still ran a 7.22 @ 94 mph. I surely would have broke out, I was so mad at myself, took 1/2 hour to cool off.

The steel shim head gaskets are thinner than composite gaskets. I think the thinnest GM steel shim is .018 while common composite head gaskets are around .038 or .042. Using a thinner head gasket will bump up compression slightly. Higher compression ratios will build torque.

That's pretty quick, I'm guessing it's not quite the setup in your sig...

NO it's not the car in sig. It's a 383 in my race car. But it the .022 gaskets did cut 2.5 tenths from my son-in-laws times. Ran 3 7.27s in a row Sun, all within .005, got to the third round and he cut a .486 light to put us on the trailer. One round from some money. Guy he lighted to won the class and bike class too. Car in sig only runs 8.90s on a cool day, 9.0 + when it's warm. Not tuning on it, as the race car is taking much of my time these days.
