Re: rear drag brakes for 9 inch

I ran Ford drum brakes for years until I finally installed some 1999 Jimmy rear disk brakes to my 9". You can see how I did it in the brake forum. Link at the top of the forum called "Disk brakes for any differential - DIY". My installation is drag race only. No provision for a park brake system without some modifications. My caliper mount system is almost identical to Currie's system and I can easily redesign it if I want to go to a dual caliper system and it all fits inside a 15" rim.

I looked at a few different OEM rear disk systems to use. I didn't like most of them because they use a solid rotor including the Explorer which is fine for street driving. The Jimmy rear disks use a vented rotor so it will dissipate heat better and is less likely to warp.

If you want to spend many hundreds of dollars on a store bought system, Willwood, Areospace, Baer/Strange all make good bolt on brake systems. It all depends on how much you want to spend.

Re: rear drag brakes for 9 inch

I have wilwoods on the rear. I will say i wish i had stranges on the rear, not cuz i dislike my wilwoods, i like the solid rotor offering over slotted/drilled. But because, as far as i know, strange is the only one who makes a front brake set up for the spindles i have coming and i have a weird OCD thing about having stranges up front and wilwoods in the back.

Re: rear drag brakes for 9 inch

I was gonna run the S10 brakes on my 9", but I also had a set of SS Camaro rear calipers. When we were mocking up the brakes in my Centerlines for clearance, we decided the SS calipers were best. I was able to run a S10 four wheel drive front rotor too. Here's how it looks.....

Jonesyfxr, is that what it looks like to me, namely a 10 bolt rear that's been reinforced? If so, do you have more information on that?

Re: rear drag brakes for 9 inch

i have aerospace components on mine at the moment that are terribly tired, but am going to get some of the new Baer Deep Stage drag brakes, which are a little more appropriate for our heavier cars, especially if they're street driven as they're a vented rotor, not just a thin solid rotor.

Re: rear drag brakes for 9 inch

Have the same as dave rr posted on mine although I have the polished calipers damnit! My 9" has 12 bolt housing ends on it so anything available for the 12 bolt will work.

Dave how is the car coming?

That's a hand built 9" my friend with 1/4" walled tubing, Moser 40 spline axles, Moser spool and Motive pro gears.
