sound quality of w6 vs. w3 or w0 subs??
Does anybody have some good seat time with all of these subs? I had planned on a trio of 10W6 subs, but that's going to end up giving me a 4 ohm load, and I'd prefer a 2.67 ohm load (3 4 ohm subs) which I can't accomplish with 3 of the W6s. I can do a pair of w6s or a trio of the others. I've got a pair of 10W0s and a pair of 10W6s at work, and the 10W6s seem to be boomier than the W0s, which really surprises me. Any other opinions?

all jl subs are designed to sound the same or very close to the same jl sound. now if the box is not to spec then it will change the signiture of it. the differance between the w6 line and the w3 line is this.
w6 has more power handaling,take a smaller box,has a smaller mounting depth.
while w3 have more excursion, better reliability built in and come with more voice coil options
by the way jl stopped making the 8w6 and 15w6 and the 10 and 12s will probally be done next year.

i know i will hear allot about how can a 15 and a ten sound alike. a 15 will sound sloppier and less acurate then the tight sounding ten.tens have less distortion and so on.. manville smith who is jl top enginner told use that at a seminar. that all jl are designed to sound alike. my 3 10w6 in my camaro sound very tight but you can listen to the subs and say that that is a jl sub if you know what jl subs sound like. my box is 2.11 cubic feet. if you need a jl sub combo looked up i have a jl referance book. also i know you no allot about audio but i have to ask. did you try the subs in your car or in a showrrom?

Showroom. I don't have enough amp in my car to push a pair of subs, but you bring up a very good point. I should try to get them into my car and see how I like it. I just wish we had some W3s in stock.

I've got a pair of 12w0's in my car and they sound sweet, very similar to a friends 12w3's. The biggest difference between these 2 is DVC's on the w3s as well as a bigger voice coil. This adds up to bigger power handling. BTW sorry if I misread your post, but 3 D4 w3s will equal 2.67 ohms, but you will need 3 8 ohm w0s to get 2.67.

I thought w0s were available in DVC configurations too. Either way, it looks like I'm going to wind up with W3s.

I have two 12W3 D4's (4 ohms) being driven by an MTX Thunder 2300X (700x1 @ 4 ohms mono). They sound great, not boomy, not muddy. I'm not breaking them up and they're each getting 100W more than what they're rated at. 250W is very conservative, I know guys with 1000a2's on a pair of 12W3's and they're still taking it. Bottom line, give them 300+ watts to really rate them. Good luck!
