if its an automatic it is a 700r4 for the v6
manual trans is a t-5 for a v6

Re: What type of Transmission do i have on my 1992 v6 .31 Camaro
I was told that I could not possibly have a 700r4 with my 1992 camaro rs 3.1L 5 speed overdrive automatic transmission because it was too big and only for high-horsepower or trucks. It has lasted me now for over 360,000 mi. with only oil and filter change regurarly. The engine had gaskets and rings all at 250,000 mi.. This succer just won't quit. Is it really a 700r4 and how much longer may I have?

Re: What type of Transmission do i have on my 1992 v6 .31 Camaro
who ever told you all that is full of crap. im not saying 700s cant handle decent power, but high horsepower?? its not in anyway shape or form a high performance trans. i absolutely love the 700r4, but as far as it stacking up against t350, t400, and powerglides...700's are the weakest. BUT they have the one extra gear over the rest called overdrive which is why i love it. and you can certainly build one up to take "high horspower". but they were never recognized for that as a factory trans. oh and no, its not 4 gears PLUS a 5th overdrive. its 3 PLUS a 4th as overdrive.

I dont know told ya that info but I got a 91 3.1L camaro with one and all of them had one regardless if it was a V6 or V8. 700r4 and 200r4 were in all thirdgen f-bodys, 700r4 came in the mid 80's through the 90's.... i think thats when the 700s started in f-bodys, like 1984 or so. But anyways yes you have that 700r4 and itll hold up with some Hp, not a crap load but unless your reallly building up a major V6, youll never need another tranny.

Guys, I have to tell you that if you were to go to a dealer and ask for parts for a 91-92 700R4, the guys would look at you like you're nuts. The designator for the 700R4 changed to the 4L60 in late 1990 with new Federal regulations. And yes, it's weak, even when made stronger. However, the earlier (pre-1987) 700's were weaker than the rest and they continued to upgrade them until the electronics were added to give it electronic shifting.

I thought the 4L60 is the same as the 700R4? 4L60E is the electronic shift controled tranny that came after the 4l60/700r4's right? So if i would buy a 700r4 shift kit it wouldnt work? Not that i m buying one, im just trying to learn the dif. between the two trannys since were on the subject.

Yes, they're the same. But we know how most parts guys are... What the sentence I posted meant is that the Fed required a name change on all transmissions sold in the US to make things easier for the average idiot to understand (what does TH-350, 400, 200-4R, 700R4 mean, anyways? The 4 and R are self explanatory, but what about the rest?).

OT: I've ran into a few people at the junkyard before that never even heard of a "700R4" They were kids of course but I had to tell them a transmission.

700 means 700 extra horsepower, duh! T stands for turbo hydraulic, which means 700+turbo= probably like 1200 horses it's yanking out of my motor. Plus I painted race stripes on my 700R4, which is about another 50 horse.

Don't try to yank my crank... I know the THM-350 can handle tons more power than the 700R4, so that's . And, you're wrong... TurboHydraMatic (THM, as in the first 3 letters of pretty much every automatic transmission GM put out except the PowerGlide), not turbo hydraulic.

and also dont forget when the torque converter locks up, because thats not "another gear". and it happens at differant rates on differant cars. my 92 rs 3.1 locks up at 40-43 mph under light load.

Re: What type of Transmission do i have on my 1992 v6 .31 Camaro
After contacting GM they identified from year, model, engine, and VIN that it was a 4-Speed ( THM700R4/4L60 ) 4-SPD Auto Trans ( MD8 ). This information I hope to verify by actually observing something written or unique on the tranny. How would this be possible?

by slipdrive, you're referring to the open carrier in the rear end? yes, that's factory on v6 cars.
