dimentions of your intercoolers on turbo'd camaro's

Just wondering . I am seeing alot on ebay right now ...kinda trying to figure out what would be easiest to fit in there . I want a 3" in/out right ? considering my other intake pipeing is all 3" ..

Other things that I am wondering about ....

1. Why are some intercoolers $85.00 while I had a guy offer me a used ATI intercooler for $900.00 ???? Like how much better can it really be ? It was even smaller .

2. Haveing 3" intake pipeing ...should I get the 2.75" pipeing , as to create a bit of an increase in preasure ( going big to small ....) ? Or should I be aiming for all 3" in/out .

3. I am trying to get an idea of the dimensions for the size I should be looking for .... I see stuff all the way up to 30" wide ... What would be the best size for me .... as to just put some tabs on the end and mount it easilly .

4. I see different styles of intercooler ...like plate , tube , etc . Whats the differances ... whats better ?

5. The one I was looking at is like 85 dollars .... it is rated at 500 hp . as a target I am shooting for 650 hp ( dowwwwwn the road when i can get the parts to make and , handle the boost ...like aluminum heads ..beterr rearend ...tranny , etc.) Would this be a bad buy for me ? It's only 85 dollars

thanx a bunch all for checking this out

Dan

They have cheap 4inch core ones now.

You should be fine with one of these.

Hay I REALLLLLY apreciate the pics and advice . Seeig how I am only hitting a max of 650 hp ( if that really) ..I should go wiht the middle one.

Now I gotta ask ... I figured I had enough room in there to slide it up in and mount. You really think it nessesary to tak the nose off to mount it ? I figured there was enough room to slid it up ther eand just make some L brackets

You can do it with the front end on. I just happen to have the complete car apart.

You might have to remove alot of plastic and even the impact bar.
Or you could do it like this...

In front of the radiator.

Yes - keep it 3".

1. Why are some intercoolers $85.00 while I had a guy offer me a used ATI intercooler for $900.00 ???? Like how much better can it really be ? It was even smaller .
Made in China vs something better? It'd be too bad if the inside of the Chinese IC wasn't very clean, a weld or brazed joint broke, and your engine ingested something. I think it depends on specific IC's.

2. Haveing 3" intake pipeing ...should I get the 2.75" pipeing , as to create a bit of an increase in preasure ( going big to small ....) ? Or should I be aiming for all 3" in/out .
Having it go down from 3 to 2.75 will increase the speed of the air moving through, but pressure will decrease (google Bernoulli's Principle). The faster the air moves, the more flow loss there is, so you'll lose some efficiency (how much depends on what your airflow is, whether it's enough to care about). You care about getting the most air through your throttlebody, so dynamic pressure in your intake pipes shouldn't be a big consideration.

3. I am trying to get an idea of the dimensions for the size I should be looking for .... I see stuff all the way up to 30" wide ... What would be the best size for me .... as to just put some tabs on the end and mount it easilly .
Spearco has performance curves for their cores and has a good booklet that explains IC sizing very well. I'm running their 2-182 core, for what that's worth, as a big front mount. It fits between the frame extensions with an inch or two to spare after the end tanks. Calculate your airflow and what efficiency (temperature & pressure drops) you want for your IC performance, and buy accordingly. The 2 things that need to balance out are the charged air size (end tank area for pressure drop) and the ambient size (face, for temperature drop).

Hay thanx for that alll. I am not up on engine calcs really... just don't know where to look for them ( googleing I go I guess )

I never knew there could be that much of a differance in interocooler quality . Thanx for the tips on that .

Re: dimentions of your intercoolers on turbo'd camaro's

I got to side with Skulte on this one.

Intercooler sizing and efficiency is about as complicated as turbo sizing and compressor maps.(not that complicated actually once u figure out how to read the maps)

Most of the time u get what u pay for as well.

Shop around and learn what u need to find the proper one.

Also frequent the buick boards :-) We cut and hack everything out there :-)

Re: dimentions of your intercoolers on turbo'd camaro's

yeah I figured i'd get this one ... it " looks" good. I figure haveing a rateign of 1000 hp .... it's uneffeciancy's ( sp :P ) will make it good enough for a 650 hp setup No? also it says 0.2- 0.5 psi drop over at 15psi ...

thanx I will check out the Buick boards ..got one in mind ?
