displayed member info sugestion
out of desperation I just joined a MB using the exact same fourm prog as our own TGO to help a friend fix a car.
just so happened they have a neat little set up for the member info that is displayed that we could use and benifit from here IMOP.
where the avatar and member name and souch are this is what is displayed.

all that is diffrent is the year, car type, model, and displacement. but I think if that info was added here it could help.
with that info automaticaly included when some one makes a post esp if they are new it could help us in answering there ??'s with out having to ask what they have.

so basically your saying to put the basic info from one's sig into the name area. not bad but that is why they have a sig option.

maybe if we do that, we won't have to see everyones sig 40 times in the same post. some of us who are 'bandwidth challanged' don't like to have ot wait for large sig pics to load.

Yeah, that will work for his bandwidth issue, but then, he wouldn't be able to tell the vehicle's info which is probably why he posted in this thread to begin with.
It really is such an easy setup, and it's would be more uniform to see right away, the person's vehicle info in their postbit instead of just the signature.

also one of my main reasons for sugesting it was new members.
I notice alot of times new members post dont have a sig yet, and forget to mention the car info. with this info added to the registration and automaticaly displayed that wouldnt happen.
also I dont have a problem changing my avatar, but I would like to know what was wrong with it? Ive been using it for several months and no one ever said any thing about it.

If it was in the user's profile, you could also set it to be required when new people registered so they would have to fill out that info and it would also help remind them, too.
I made that change to the board i administrate a long time ago and it was a useful change.

It's not completely done, though. You don't have the info displayed in the postbit. If you need help, let me know.
If it's not displayed in the postbit, then it won't be displayed where the people here was referring to.

It's done. By going to your User Cp you can now list your car, engine, and transmission.

All you have to do is:
In the Admin panel, go to the User Profile Fields section and click on Modify. Hover your mouse over the "Edit" URL of each field: Car, Engine, Transmission. Note the last string of each URL, that will tell you the profile field ID (profilefieldid=X). Since i don't have access, and i have no idea how many other custom profile fields you may have tried in the past, those numbers can be just about anything. Remember which number is for which field.
Now, go to the Templates section, click on Modify. Find the Style Set that your board is running. Click on the Expand list under that style set. Click on Expand next to the Postbit Templates section. Click on the Edit link next to the postbit template.
In that section, find:
Location: $post[field2]<br>
Posts: $post[posts]
Add a <br> after the [posts] line then add the following:
Car: $post[fieldX]<br>
Engine $post[fieldX]<br>
Transmission: $post[fieldX]
Make sure you have still have the </smallfont></td> after the above.
In the above, where X is after field, enter the appropriate profile field id as i mentioned above. Like
Transmission: $post[field6]
i am not too good at explaning things. Let me know if you need help.

Heh, cool, I like it. It does seem redundant though, since my sig is short already! And it's showing up for people that don't have information in there (that's how I noticed that I should probably fill it in, and see if there were any messages up in this forum about it)

On some other boards they have a selection box for what year and car you have to deter people who want to list every car they have, so we would have a Year box a Camaro/Firebird box and a box listing models of each with a clickable link that takes you to the Readers Ride if you really want to know what mods etc they have. Probably a pain to script but at some point it might be a good idea. The way it is now is a step in the right direction but you should be able to turn it off.

I agree that it should be prefilled with options that the user must select, rather than allowing the user to fill out the info. It's another way for someone to abuse it if it's left open like that.
It's not hard to script that at all. And, it would be much better for future database work and plans.

well, in my mind something like this is starting to get too long.
Car: 1984 Camaro Z28; 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD
Engine: Buick Turbo 3.8L v6; 4G63 with 14b (FP Green on the way)
Transmission: 200-4R; stock T5

Yep it is too long, smaller font+prefilled boxes with clickable linky. Can't go wrong there. Transmission and engine would not be necessary then.
