Site Performance

is it just me or has this sites speed and performance seriously degraded ever since the new move?

Initially, there was performance issues when TGO moved servers, despite the fact that the 'new' server was an upgrade over the 'old' server, hardware wise.

The issue, or a majority of it, was traced down to table locking in mysql, by Jason.

Since Jason took steps to help deal with the above, I have not noticed much performance issues since. The server load may spike on occasion, which is normal, but I have not seen it anywhere near as bad as it was when TGO first was placed on this server and the search feature would bring down the server.

Not long ago, the server even received an extra memory upgrade on top of it:

Well as of right now it seems very slow, sometimes it takes 30 sec. to load up a page.

I've been on the forum often lately and have not noticed any performance issues today. Currently, the server load is fine.

Perhaps you have a connection problem, your ISP or backbone to thirdgen.org

I came to this board to see if there were any posts from anyone else having posts load slow and found this thread. I have to agree with 86Z and AaronIROCZ it is noticably slower. I am on a dialup and don't expect blinding speed but 20 - 40 seconds to load a post without any photos is typical.

With as many members as there are on TGO, along with the different ISPs, backbones, and any network issues, there is bound to be some people who have some issues that are not within TGO's control.

I've been on the forums often today and I still have not seen any performance issue at all on TGO. The server load is low, and tracerts to the server show very good results. When I've uploaded or download to the server using FTP, results have been good, too.

I'm on DSL (100mbps) and I am having 20-30 second page loads the past few days.

*EDIT* I've timed the last 10-15 threads entered and it has taken @15 seconds to load most but longer with several pictures.*END EDIT*

My anti-virus service blocks pop-ups, etc (I see very few of the ads on this computer but I do on other computers). Could that have something to do with the recent slowness?

100mbps sounds like your LAN as I highly doubt you have DSL offering that type of speed.

There are no pop ups (in the form of ads) on this site. Sounds like you either have spyware, a virus, or other malware.

The forum has not been nearly that slow for me.

Not sure if it is related, but Jason enabled boolean searches this late evening. Since then, even I have had difficulty with server response on the forums. Prior to that, I had not noticed much performance issues, outside of a few glitches.

I came here looking to post about slow site speeds, too, and here you all are. So I guess it's not just me.

I thought my computer might have some "bugs," even though I've got active anti-spyware protection and an excellent anti-virus program, so I ran full-system scans twice(once while in safe mode, just to be sure), but everything's clean, and TGO is still running at a snail's pace. I'm having no issues with any other site I've logged onto... just TGO.

I have noticed that since yesterday afternoon that trying to open up threads in the message boards is taking about 5 minutes or so and that any of the gif's or images are not showing up. I have tried from 3 different systems at different locations and still have the same problem. Has anybody else seen this?

I did some checking with the LAN/WAN guys at my company about the problem that I have been experiencing. It looks like it has to do with the fact that the site is now using port 8080. That port is blocked at a lot of companies because it is a proxy port from what they are telling me. This could be the cause of some of the problems people are experiencing.

The older server seemed much faster then this one. Could you post specs of both servers for comparision? Someone said the old one was AMD. Sure hope you not using intel now.

Yes, the old server used AMD. I no longer have direct access to the old server, but basic specs from what I recall was: dual AMD 1600+ processors, 1 gig of memory and some ide/scsi drives running Fedora Core 2(?) or 3 - I cannot recall at the moment.

Jason posted the following specs for the current server:
Dual 2.8GHz Xeon Processors (800MHz FSB) w/ HT
2GB of DDR2-400 RAM
(3) 73GB 10K RPM SCSI Drives in RAID 5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
MySQL 4.1.18 (upgraded from the RHEL3-supported 3.23.58 with the official MySQL-supplied RPMs )
Apache 2.0.46-56 (official RHEL3 build)
PHP 4.3.2-26 (official RHEL3 build)
The memory was recently upgraded from 2GB to 4GB

Images are fed from a separate server so Apache doesn't have to spawn a 30MB process to serve a 20K file.

if your company is blocking traffic on port 8080 (or any other port) then you might want to think about the reasons why they are doing it. The only reason I can think of is that they want you to actually do work, not surf a forum site.

When I experienced my run in with it being slow I was at my parents house. Now when I am at home it is running great. My parents connection t1 while mine at home is cable. So I beleive that my case was my internet connection. Sorry to complain to you when it was my problem the whole time. Hope this helps.

Time of the day will also affect the speed. This site is busiest in the evenings, between 6PM and Midnight (Eastern). If you were viewing during the middle of the day then it was probably a lot faster. If it was the other way then that was probably network issues on your end causing the lag.

I was on the forums when Aaron was also on the forums and posted about slow speeds. The forums were operating normally for me. I ran a few tests to the IP address he was posting from, to see if there was an obvious network issue near his end due to the fact things were OK for me. I seen some packet loss near his local end. That would cause performance issues.

I understand why the company has this port blocked, I was simply pointing out a change that has been made recently that could be the cause of some of the problems people are experiencing. I work on an IT helpdesk and while performing my job I have the benefit of being able to surf the web while talking with clients. I know that there are a few ISPs that also block this port for some reason. I have heard that it is a common port that many companies block. I just thought that I would point out a change that was made that could affect many users of this board. I will continue to use the board when I am at home but will not be able to check in on happenings with the site from work any longer. Not trying to cause waves, just pointing out something that I found out.

In addition to being used by some proxy servers, port 8080 is also used as a common port for web servers. In fact, it is normally listed as "http-alt". Tomcat, for one, is set to a default of port 8080 as it is generally run beside Apache. Any server spawned by a user other than 'root' would also probably default to that port (as only 'root' can open that port).

I just noticed something interesting. When I came onto the boards this evening I was not logged in and was viewing them as a guest. The posts loaded fast - really fast. I then logged in and things noticably slowed down. It again took 20-30 seconds to load a post.

I logged on and off of the site several times trying to open posts in each situation. When ever I was logged off and was a guest posts loaded very fast. However, each time I logged on things again got slow as molasses. Coincidence???????

Ive also noticed that sometimes (even during the morning and mid day) that it can take quite some time to load pages.

Maybe its time to outfit the server with an intercooled turbo and 500 shot

Or clock that baby up and rig up some Ln2 cooling...
