Re: search option

What type of problem are you having?

I just tried a general search and used the keyword: camaro and it came back and said that no matches could be found. Now I know that is way off lol.

Yup, the search feature is not working. I've tried GTA, LT1, LS1 and it did not find any matches ِ

Broken...

I have to keep answering the same questions over and over that I know have been covered. Since the "down for maintanance" this has been going on. It took me quite some time for me to even find my origional post on the subject just to give them a link.

Re: search option

I posted a brief announcement about the issue, but yes, unfortunately, search is down and will be down until next week. Thirdgen.org had used a "3rd party" search engine, rather than vB's search engine. The new server needs a software upgrade in order for the search feature to work. This will result in some downtime as the software is upgraded. At this time, we cannot turn back to vB's search engine for a few reasons, while leaving the forums online. So, instead, it is planned to have the search feature back online sometime next week when mysql can be upgraded.

Re: search option

I just read a post on C&C t-tops. The peson posting said they tried to SEARCH and found no results. Since I've posted on several threads on these t-tops, I thought that can't be so. I tried searching and came up with nothing. Then I tried searching on my username and still nada. Then I tried other terms I've posted on, (hatch motor, headlight motor, etc.) still nothing. Yep, I'd say the SEARCH function is broken. So before anyone jumps on antother TGO Member that they need to search, try it yourself. You may be surprised as I was by the results of your efforts.

Re: search option

Rather then posting bullitens about which obviously most people dont read. How about making it so when you select the search feature, it says "not currently useable due to working on site upgrades". That way, people know its not broke, but currently disabled.

How about also knocking it down from 45sec, to 30 or 20?

Re: search option

Dale has a good point about having a message on the search result that says currently disabled, etc.

not going to be able to avoid ppl posting common questions until search is workign again

i have noticed a huge increase in computer/est system removal questions and engine v-6 to v-8 bellhousing pattern questions too

among other basic commonly asked stuff as well

i try to post to those questions because i can put up with repetitive/repeat info replying

you keep wanting ot refer ppl to certain thread(s) to help them with their common question post but then you remember that search is not working and so you cant find said threads to refer them to

lol

search feature- just like electricity, water, food and so on- is taken for granted, and then when its broken its no fun lol

amusing in a crazy way,

so for now theres going to be alot of repeat posting and very basic questions posted that normally would not be
as much anyways

Actually Dale, I had done exactly just that. In fact some likely had seen it when I briefly had the search box replaced with such a notice. However, for a few reasons, I reverted it back to normal and left the announcement.

In regard to the search timeout limit, that's been a fairly common suggestion. However, I do not believe members understand that it's not simply just a number set to inconvenience members who search. Instead, the search timeout can play a large role on the server's performance, thus impacting everyone.

Generally, it's better to impact a group (those using the search at that given time), rather than impact the entire members with slow page responses due to the server being busy serving those search requests.

We're not trying to discourage searches, and some may argue that is exactly what we're doing indirectly. However, those may not understand running a website the size of TGO, with it's fairly large database and user activity, does not run on cheap hardware. That's not even to mention that stock vB search engine isn't exactly without it's own problems.

Perhaps down the road the search timeout can be tweaked lower if the server can handle it efficiently.

I hope that is not the case, as I have noticed a huge dropoff in the number of posts lately. I usually am able to check the board once a day, and I click on "New Posts." I used to see 450-550 a day, but now I am seeing only 250-300 a day.

Re: search option

The ThirdGen search seems to be working again - Sort of. I have to admit; It's nice to be able to search thru each individual forum again ! - BUT - It looks like we lost almost 6 years of data ! Thers a gap from 12-01 till 7-07 when using the "Show Thread" option !

When using the "Show Post" option there is no new posts at all.

Please tell me that the last back-up of the Third Gen tech boards wasn't back in 2001. I have noticed that the Google search isn't locating any recent posts at all.

Will the ThirdGen search feature ever return any of the post from 12-31-01 till 07-04-07 again ???
