you can just remove it, and plug the vacuum line. search the forum on 'dual snorkel' and you can get some ideas from what others have done.

the only problem with the open element is that once the engine warms up, you are sucking in very hot air. the flow is remarkably better, but the hot air is not. just a thought. can't beat it for $20...
