you don't need a scanner to check the code. All that you need is a paper clip on the ALDL port. Search will reveal many threads on how to flash codes

when you open the hood and look there is no way of knowing if your heads have been ported, cam changed, bored and stroked etc. So, have at it because there is no way of seeing that with your eyes.
