Your best bet would be to mount it in the original location. But make sure you take your time and do it right, there are alot of stories about it no working properly when not installed properly.

Yeah but to mess up a $40 handle verses three hours of work to make a cheap one. yeah i knew the set screw thats what i ended up doing in the end.

Thanks, but see the problems with the aluminum ones like is that they would be a lot harder to convert to be usable on an automatic trans.

I threaded the shaft, but i can't thread the wood or put a nut in there because the wood is only 3/4in thick and the shaft is 1/2in but i think i have an idea.

And yes i know there is always duct...
