I had to replace my handle because the threads wore out and it comes apart. The tiny wires had 2 little clips on them to attach to the button. The button is just press fitted into the handle.

I think you hit the nail right on the head there. Brake fluid ran onto the headers and made a cloud of smoke, must of messed with the beams, that might explain it.

It's a tight fit in but the stock shroud was kind of sloppy so I made my own hold downs from alumunium bar stock and heated them and bent them to shape. Here's a pic, hope it helps you out.
