Re: 454 piston slap...thinking about a one hole repair.

Found a used piston and rod from a Gen 5 for $40. My 454 is a Mark 4. Piston looks the same but different part numbers. Silvolite says they are both 5cc, but not sure if the weights are the same. ...

454 piston slap...thinking about a one hole repair.

Picked up another 87 Suburban, This one has a TBI 454. Bought it for parts. Got it really cheap.

The engine runs suprisingly well. Drove it home, but...it's got what I and the previous owner...

Re: So! what is the deal with the GM Ramjet?

I put my other brand new RamJet up for auction with an ECM, harness and cam. No messing around with fabbing your own crossover, and coming up with a fuel pressure regulator. Ends tomorrow if you're...

Re: Turbo Motor Build: Vortec, 383, RamJet, Port Modded EBL. Compression Ratio? Cam

I'm over on the western slope, not too far from Aspen. Took the kids skiing again today. Best snow in decades.

I hear what you're saying. I really don't want the engine to be gutless off-boost....

Re: Ideal Compression for Turbo

What if we approach this debate from the quantity of oxygen molecules available to combine with fuel to produce power?

More oxygen molecules means we can add more fuel, and therefore deliver...

Re: Turbo Motor Build: Vortec, 383, RamJet, Port Modded EBL. Compression Ratio? Cam

Good suggestions. Thanks. If I can educate myself a bit more on the cams before I talk to these folks, I might have a more productive conversation.

I've read here on thirdgen that some of the...

Re: Turbo Motor Build: Vortec, 383, RamJet, Port Modded EBL. Compression Ratio? Cam

I've got 40 hours or more over there. Takes about that long to read Marty's "Grenade" post.

Did find a few gems about turbo cams here and there. Most guys over there are looking for 1000rwhp and...

Re: Turbo Motor Build: Vortec, 383, RamJet, Port Modded EBL. Compression Ratio? Cam

With the ZZ383, the magazine says they are running 9.7 CR. GM tech specs below say 9.6. Sounds like a high compression ratio to be running boost, especially with hyper pistons...

Re: Turbo Motor Build: Vortec, 383, RamJet, Port Modded EBL. Compression Ratio? Cam

Injectors: You may be right, some say 830 some say less. Duty cycle is pretty easy to monitor with an EBL. I'll go larger if need be.

Drivetrain: You're right, the 10-bolt front axle is...

Re: Turbo Motor Build: Vortec, 383, RamJet, Port Modded EBL. Compression Ratio? Cam

Yep, an NP205 would allow me to engage 4wd for more traction under boost. Then the weak link becomes the 10-bolt up front. Solution: Dana 60 with 35 spline Dana 70 stub shafts. It's just sitting...

Re: So! what is the deal with the GM Ramjet?

The mounting holes in the Edelbrock rails line up perfectly with the tapped mounting holes in the RamJet. I did enlarge the mounting holes in the rails about 1/16". The length of the injectors I used...

Re: Pistons: Forged vs. Hyper? Are forged hard to live with?

Lots of votes for forged pistons. Sounds reassuring. Other than price, are there no downsides to using forged pistons?

Re: So! what is the deal with the GM Ramjet?

You won't need to fab custom rails. Get the Edelbrock rails for Vortec heads (Part #3631), they'll run you about $80. I started with a bare RamJet and these rails work great.

Re: Cam swap, now no oil to passenger rocker arms. Any ideas?

Whew! I think you're right. I'm using a Mr. Gasket 3795 primer. It's pretty narrow and does allow oil to come up the distributor hole. Sounds like I should be using one more like a Proform 66896 that...
