I had that happen to me quite a few years back when I first built up a car, exact same thing castle nut sheared off the cotter pin and catastrophic faliure crossing over rail road tracks at 20MPH....

it would be worth it but i would not be cheap, you're looking at changing the heads to a smaller CC and putting flat top pistons to get your compression up to around 10:1 instead of the factory 7.5:1...
