Installing megashifter in '91 Formula

My shift linkage on the stock shifter broke last night so Im thinking this would be a good time to go to the B&M Megashifter. I believe it was Wheelspin who installed one on his Formula. The ads for them always say that it is not for 91-92 Formula. Can whoever that was that installed one on their Formula please contact me for some advice.

I don't know what is different with the '91 and 92...but since you have a TH350 it probably doesn't apply to you.

I really don't like the adapter bracket that allows it to work with the factory shifter cable, like my first Megashifter came with . I would recommend getting the B&M cable instead.

BTW, I would caution you against buying a used one. They do wear out eventually and then don't shift properly. My first one lasted about 10 years.

Re: Installing megashifter in '91 Formula

My understanding is that the problem is not the transmission, but the console setup, or clearance of something therein. Im not sure what broke, the stock cable or connection to the shift lever or what. I guess I will order the B&M cable with the shifter so I can have a nice strong setup.

I plan on buying a new one from Jegs.

Re: Installing megashifter in '91 Formula

Hi Larry, I installed one my '89. I used the stock mounting points on the trans tunnel. The stock console plate has to be cut to fit over/around the megashifter. the plate can become quite fragile. the included console plate mounts on top of the stock one, and clearance between the side mirror/window switches and the ashtray release is tight. I plan on removing the ms plate and making some clearance with a dremel or grinder, does'nt need much. I also bought the 3' hd cable from b&m, wasn't happy coiling the 5' over the tranny. Had to elongate the hole in the tranny tunnel to fit the angle of the 3' though. Having the cable straight with no bind at the shifter is critical, probably have to bend the mounting tang for the cable, but that's no problem.

offshore now, so no pics.

Re: Installing megashifter in '91 Formula

I like the long cable, it fit better on my Camaro...but then again, nothing on my car is original so what worked for me might not be best for your setup.

My factory cable was WAY to short and BARELY fit. That is one of the reasons why I went with the long cable. I think B&M also has a standard cable and a heavy duty cable. My recollection is that the standard cable was a lot stronger than the factory cable and easier to bend than the HD.

If I were doing it again I would probably buy the B&M long, standard duty cable.

The kit comes with the standard duty, 5' cable. It requires a loop over the tranny. It is a lighter gauge, and much easier to bend. It comes with the kit, so try it out first.

HIya, no I have not got it in yet. Ive been traveling really a lot on business. Ive got the old one out and it looks a bit complicated with the different things to connect and make sure the car will start in park and not other gears and all that. Are you going to be arround this weekend? Could I call you with a question or two if they come up?

Yes, I'll be home this weekend. You're welcome to call. Probably have my console off doing some tidy up work (Gear Indicator keeps jumping off track, will put a drop of blue loctite on for that).

PM Sent with numbers.

Out of town (again). Had another board member write today asking on the install. Definitely home by weekend of 25th, will glady provide info. You are welcome to come by and check out my install. Write sooner if you can't wait. May do a full write-up on the Formula / Megashifter issue for the board. Cable angle is critical.
