Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

Over the last few months, I've been averaging close to 19 MPG in the city with the red Z. I just finished the first full tank of gas after installing a MSD Blaster GM coil and a set of March performance billet underdrive pullies (crank and alternator). I just averaged 20.73 MPG in the city and that was even stepping on the gas (having fun) half of the time!! I might be able to squeeze a little more if I baby the car for the duration of the whole tank! Oh, and the adder power was a noticable difference too!

Just thought I'd share.....

That's better than what my stealth is getting. I need to get into chip burning on my bird. I started on making a cable to start data logging.

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

I left highway mode alone and just tweaked the hell out of VE until I had 128's across the board at all RPM's below 3,500 rpms, then tweaked PE for WOT.

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

there may be another mile or 2 in yours' with hiway mode, it helped me some. i never got to 128 across the board, i hit 126 ~131 & stopped tuning. i need injectors so i figured that was good enough.
right now my wideband reads good at idle in open loop, but when it goes into closed loop it goes rich.
if i ever get off my butt & have my AutoProm fixed i want to try open loop idle in AUJP V4.

well i don't do alot of city driving . i have the same coil , M.S.D. 8.5 wires , AC stock plugs , M.S.D. cap & rotor , 1.52 roller tip rockers , flowtech headers , 3'' flowmaster exhaust , hybrid T.P.I./T.B.I. inlet system with K&N inside and lid . on the road from s.miss. to san antonio and to tampa i have got as high as 29+ M.P.G. . by the way syn. lube all the way , trans. T.5 , rear 3.08 , use cruise when possible . found it hard to believe the first time or two . after 3rd. trip , love it . P.S. no E.C.M. or chips MODS .

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

That's pretty good for a 305 TBI, but the motor in the red Z makes atleast 360 HP at the flywheel! It takes more fuel to run the motor in it.

The last time I hooked up a LM-1 to the black car, I found that when the car was in highway mode, it was WAY too lean ( 16-17:1), even after tweaking it a bit. I usually just disable that stuff, including all the add-a-timing tables and just fine tune VE and the main spark advance tables (beefed up of course), then tune PE last. It made the wide-band happier doing it that way. I didn't want to lean the crap out of it too much and burn a piston....

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

I manage to get 17 or so MPG out of my car (highway) and it is tuned to a perfect 128blm across the board.

The car enters highway mode and everything, no idea why mileage is so crappy. I really need to hook it up to a wideband and tune for a higher FR.

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

Mike, i understand about not wanting to burn a piston. at the level of power your at it would be too easy to cook the motor.
with mine dead stock its not too much of a worry for me, as long as im not getting into lean misfire im ok.
that kind of power makes your 20.7 MPG city even more impressive, very nice

Sonar, something has to be off, you should be getting way better than 17 hiway.
if i remember right, you just have bolt on mods, right?
my best hiway so far was 29.7. my last road trip i was down some, i only got about 26.5. but i did drive a little faster most of the way, around 80. and i did spend about 20 minutes up around 100~110.

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

I'm averaging around 20MPG in my vert, 22 on a good day. Have a new Chevron station opened up on spencer selling gas at $2.63 a gallon so filled up and had some fun yesterday.

I am envious of you people and your high mileage. I am not exactly sure why I don't get good mileage. I wish I could say more, but I have picked through this car with a fine tooth comb. It has always just had very bad mileage. The car doesn't even get close to passing emissions testing due to it being incredibly rich. Though, like I said, 128blm across the board.

Re: Nice increase in gas mileage!!!

i thought i was getting bad millage. I get about 16 in the city and 23 on the highway. I really need a tune up, because if i can ~30 on highway on my firebird, there is no point on taking stealth to the road trips.
