totally not worth it... file for a lost title and be legal.. takes time and money.. but if the car comes up stolen you lose everything cuz the cops take her... Happened to me once... I bought a 1978 z28 for 1000 and started to work on it when i noticed all the vins were removed. Got the money back from the guy and gave back the car way before anything else happened...

i've never done it but the first thing i would do is run the vin number... make sure theres no mechanics lean on the car and you can also tell if it was salvaged or not...if its an 1982 z28 that suffered major fire damage about a yr ago thats my old car... lol.. i'd scrap it.. lol Seriously though run the vin number with your insurance agent or the bank or carfax.. something like that .. find out all you can on it before you drop the money to do a title search... helps you know whether or not you will get to keep it.. As far as how much it costs i couldn't tell you cuz i've never filed one..

There is a lady that does my title work for $50 here in Oklahoma. I had to have my firebird Title 42'ed, no problems, had a title in 2 months. Cost me Tag,Title and excise tax and the cost to get it done was less than $200. She can do out of state titles for a lil more money.
I don't know the laws in Texas, but Oklahoma is pretty simple. You can go stand in front of a Judge here with a notarized bill of sale and proof and get a Transfer of ownership and have a title in a week.

Last time I looked at this issue (an '81), the VIN plate was located
on the dash, held in by rivets. The windshield must be removed for
access, but this was not intended to be a super-secure installation.
One reason my t/a was parked for almost 8 years till now, is title problem.
The car was in my brothers name and, he has disappeared off the face of the
planet. I got a 'Bonded Title' with no problem locally from Xpertautotitle. The 'bonded title' is good for 3 years. If there is no claim on the car in 3 years then i can transfer it to a regular title. You can probably get a lower price from Lawrence Auto Title.
I just got the title in my hand Monday and locked it up in my safe... LOL
if i were to buy a camaro with no title ... could i git the vin from another camaro and use it for the camaro with no title to git it registered ???
Being the owner of a towing company here in the Orlando area. I would HIGHLY suggest that you do not do that. ITS A FELONY!! Not worth it!!!

I got mine with no title. Filled out a bill of sale and a power of attorney from the TN Dept of Transportation. Took both to get notorized (free at my bank) with the previous owner. Took said papers to the DOT and paid $13 for a replacement title - after it came back clear I could then register it on my own.
