Exhaust and Shop
i own a 92 z-28 5.7, w/ dual cats. I am thinking of changing the exhaust from stock. I am not sure where to go and i'm curious about what people have done and like. I was thinking flowmaster, but was told i could only do 80 series though? Then i was thinking Cherry Bomb (muffler), but dont know to much about them. I heard about GMMG too, they look bad *** but very $$$ and i dont know if they sell a kit for dual cats.
so maybe an actual specialty exhaust shop could help me out but i cant find any besides meineke and the chains....there was a place @ chandler blvd and I-10 but $900 for a cat back exhaust, flow 80's, installed was a bit much. (Cat back on my jeep w/ dual exhaust, flowmaster, was $750 w/ a high flow cat)
I live in chandler, so something in the area would help.

Re: Exhaust and Shop
Only place I have experience with is a place called Scottsdale Muffler, which obviously isn't in Chandler. They did my Typhoon's exhaust and did a pretty good job and was reasonably priced. Is it something you could do yourself, exhaust installation isn't to tricky if you have the time, space, and tools.

Re: Exhaust and Shop
How much of the exhaust are you changing? If you wanna just do a cat-back there shouldn't be any welding, just bolt on. But if you don't have the space it doesn't matter anyways. Even those chains can do a decent job with something like an exhaust. You just have to make sure you tell them exactly what you want and be very specific.

Re: Exhaust and Shop
Can't really tell you what would be the best system for the price but I think my buddy is getting the hooker headers and probably just gonna go with the hooker cat-back with the y pipe. We're still pricing stuff out. Most likely gonna install it ourselves though. Check out this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...tart-here.html

Re: Exhaust and Shop
Well ill tell you what I did to my firebird when I had it. I installed some mid length headers then had a custom Y-pipe made to a single cat ( i had 2 ). The Y pipe was a 3 inch pipe, 3 inch in and out high flow cat, 3inch back to a dynomax bullet muffler. Muffler is like 40 bucks from summit and the shop can get the high flow cats for around 150 bucks. Some piping and welding cost depends on how you want the exhaust to exit, tips/ no tips and such.
Anyways the shop is called Gearhead Garage, talk to Matt. He does custom exhaust on all f-bodys.
Depending on what your trying to accomplish, there are a few roads to take.
The stock manifolds on the L98 are very restrictive and if you have the money are a great HP adder. Mac midlengths are a decent price too. The stock y-pipe is another restiction that if you can afford to replace I would highly reccomend it. FYI the inspection guys here could car less if you have dual cats or a single since you have to pass the sniffer, I passed with no problem on a single cat ( dual cat car ). If your just looking for a muffler from experience, flowmasters sound decent but there are better sounding mufflers out there. GMMG and others can get pretty pricey, but IMO a bullet on a L98 sounds tough as hell. And for 40 bucks you cant go wrong lol.

I use these guys in Mesa, AZ. No corporate B.S. and they do a lot of custom work. When I went in there last they just had put a 350 TPI motor in a old RX7. They are really laid back and you can not beat there prices. They will also custom bend a system for you. Something the chains cannot do.

Re: Exhaust and Shop
i went there to get my flowmaster just welded on, it cost me $130 bucks, just to weld it on... i was living in a apartment at the time and didnt have anywhere to do it but 130 was a little ridiculous, but i will have to say they did a good job on what they did do, no problems yet

Re: Exhaust and Shop
Thanks for all the reply's...i am not having any type of rust issues. The stock exhaust looks like its brand new to be honest. I just wanted better sound, so i was thinking of true duals possibly, but i think i might just go the cheap route. Prob. just gonna buy a muffler, new tips and a mig welder. I figure i wanted to learn to weld anyways so this is a good way to start. Ill just have to do it in the driveway.

Re: Exhaust and Shop
If/when I can get my Thirdgen back on the road (blew a head gasket, possibly seized engine) I'm gonna get with Snflupigus (he bought a welder) and we are gonna make true-duals for mine. Usually there isn't enough room to run good duals underneath but I'm gonna go with side exiting before the rear tires w/ rectangular tips. I think it'll look/sound sick as hell And lucky me, no emmisions
Check the exhaust board. I don't remember the name of the thread, but there is a HUGE thread about exhaust installs (thats like 3-4 years old now) with tons of awesome info about custom setups...

Re: Exhaust and Shop
I think my whole exhaust system cost me about $700. That was for headers, new cat and catback system. I went with a Pace Setter catback system and stock cat. Edelbrock has the headers that will be good for any car. If I were you, I'd do the whole exhaust all new - Y-pipe costs about $107, get a single catalytic converter (direct fit) for $140 and the rest from Summit Racing or Jegs or something like that. It will save you a lot of money and you can just hack off your old exhaust and throw it away. The Pace Setter system I have is $260 from Summit. Don't forget to buy clamps. That is all you really need. Forget the dual cat. Make it simple and do-able.

Also, Bruce, if you need a 305 block, I have one from my 87 Bird. It's in good shape. Will sell to you for reasonable price. Also have 2 350 blocks here that would need a little work, but usable.
