engine, and smog

ok guys, i just got a new 305, and i am pissed cause i know it is a total waste of time and money to mod it, so i have decided to just go with a new 350, Im gonna start saving at least $500 a month for the engine, but i am a little confused on what to get, I posted this question here cause i gotta pass CA smog, so since i have TBI do I have to stick with FI or can I go carb, and is there any carbed 350 that will pass smog in CA? ALso, anyone want a 305 with under 2000 miles? it does have one plus. it gets good mileage now that the engine is broken in. 20-30 mpg

I'd rather have a 305 TPI than a 350 TBI. I'd say convert it to TPI and go on from there (will still be legal). Then when your 305 gives up then replace it.

i heard that 350 TBI's can be made to flow pretty well, like with the holley 670 cfm tbi unit, and isnt swapping to TPI pretty difficult for as small of a HP increase as it is? Basically, i just want to go as fast as possible for the least amount of money, sorry that i questioned everything that you said James_85Z28 but im 16, so im on a tight budget, and i want to be going fast relatively soon. I want my car to be feared where i live. LOL and i dont know if u can answer it or not, but would a carb be legal?

I think the enhancement from TPI would make you happier than having a TBI 350, unless you just want to tell people you have a 350, like Nigel . Having the TPI to work from as a starting point would give you better results down the road with other mods. I know I would rather have a 305 TPI than a 350 TBI. If you want a TPI ungrade than there are people who could set you up.

A carb would not be legal under any circumstance for your 1991 RS.

Uh I am not a r!cer. I don't just get stuff so I can brag I have it, I get it because I want it. I don't have time to play the bragging rights games

Ok, on the TPI install, how hard is it? and do you just take the whole ECM from a TPI car? I am really interested and can have over a $1000 pretty quickly, me being a drug dealer and all, just kiddin guys and is there is a different cam and heads on TPI cars, right? how much would you guys estimate the cost to be for the Whole TPI setup?

I guess I'll do a search now and check out TPI stuff and cruise the TPI boards

Thanks for the advice guys

My dad would be the guy to take your car to for a TPI install. He converted his 92 RS to TPI and gained 17 HP and 70 TQ to the rear wheels. Plus he converted the stock TBI wire harness, saving a lot of money and hassle there.

You need the complete TPI intake, computer, chip, and air intake ducting to make the swap.

So basically, my first step is to go to a junkyard and rip basically everything possible off of a LB9 then go and talk to your dad? does he have a shop, and where is it, Im relatively new, so give me a break, i dont really know anyone on the boards.

thanks a lot

His dad is Dyno Don here. He has a shop in Anaheim, look for the "friendly companies" thread, he is at the top. He's a busy guy because he does good work.

Besides the intake and computer, it would also be a good idea to get the fuel lines between the rail and chassis, as long as the donor car has the same accessory configuration you've got.

hey bro don't even bother going to a junk yard. call Thomas *** from house of Camaro. He sells used parts and he can get you a complete TPI. The number is (818)884-3044. He his in canoga park. I know what you mean about the 305 tbi being slow. It thought about modding it or doing and engine swap but just decided to buy a whole new car.
