umi solid motor mounts

I have a complete umi performance tubular front end. I went with their solid mounts not knowing any better. My dyno don headers are on the passenger frame. I unbolted the passenger side clam shell and jacked up the engine looks like I need about 3/8" to 1/2". I tried a 1/2" spacer but looks like the geometry make the bolt holes not line up. I would rather nice new mounts seeing Im redoing the whole car or am I stuck using the stock passenger side. Please help I dont want my headers smacking the frame

Do you have the mounts on right? The engine side mounts are different right to left just about the amount your off.

Re: umi solid motor mounts

thats the problem the umi mounts are not side specific. thats why my header hits. I was hoping I would be ok but no dice. I think the need to redesign the mounts because I spent alot on them and now I have to mess with the mounts or use my factory passenger block mount

No no, the UMI mounts are fine, it's the mounts on the engine block. The two are different, if you removed them you may have them reversed.

Re: umi solid motor mounts

I installed dyno dons on a stock 87 iroc and they hit the frame to. I had to dent the tubes in to clear

I also had umi solid mounts and they did not work. Holes were wrong they never lined up

Re: umi solid motor mounts

Im coming to realization that Im gonna fab my own passenger clamshell. My headers clear the frame by about 1/4" if I jack up passengerside by about 3/8". Only thing I have to do is wrap the header because its right up against a/c box. Thirdgen problems. Lol I already ordered 3/16 plate steel and will be welding up a clamshell as soon as I can.

Re: umi solid motor mounts

I have emailed UMI on this specific problem. Moroso solids have side specific pads that mount to K member. The factory reverses this and makes the actual clamshell that bolt to the block side specific. All in all it the same concept arriving at the same result. UMIs solids, while they look nice are not side specific anything. I wanted these because of the black look to match my UMI kmember, but UMI says on the car they copied off they were both the same. I've seen to many where they were not and never the same, ever. You will exhibit the same problem you are having with not the correct motor mount clamshell, exhaust will be about 1/4 inch off pass framerail. It's a fact on that. The K member is not symmetrical on these cars. One is taller than the other to center the motor, So regular SBC same clamshells on either side won't work. Don't get me wrong you can bolt a motor in, just the exhaust will not be right and nothing will fit correctly. I've asked UMI to look into this more and they didn't seem interested to or even research what I told them. I would return the UMI pieces and just get the Moroso units. They do it right like stock. Makes no sense why Moroso, and GM do it this way and UMI doesnt. Really a shame because I have a lot of UMI stuff on the car.

Re: umi solid motor mounts

Even in my search, because these are labeled to fit gbody as well, I couldn't find anything on side specific mounts for Gbody. So basically these are just SBC cookie cutter mounts. If these were right I would have bought these. UMI when they were new to the community I felt they listened to the thirdgen crowd. Some of these cars are over 30 years old. Some members here have been playing with them that long. I bought mine in 94. You'd think they would at least give some members here the benefit of the doubt in terms of info and if something isn't right. I'm not 100%sure about a lot of things, but this I can say I am 110% sure that thirdgen clamshells are side specific, end of story. This bit me in the *** long ago and I have ran into it numerous times since. Just redo the motor mount kit. This can really chap someone's ***, esp someone new to these cars. Go through all that work installing a motor, headers and just scratching your head wondering what the heck is wrong here, this doesnt look right, doesnt fit right. Then they go blaming the header manufacture saying the headers are off etc. Its a top notch crafted part, 110% wrong design.

Re: umi solid motor mounts

I ended up making my own passenger clamshell. I have to tweak it a bit but it isnt nearly as bad as the umi piece. I second guessed my height addition and took some off. The engine settled and my header just kisses the frame where as before it was right up against it. when Im done with my body work I will rework the clamshell and be done with it. It is a shame that umi wont revisit the issue. Im glad I can weld or I would be sucking wind because I had these mounts for over a year so no returns for me
