To the track and ran this? WTH!! Disappointment!!! Need top end! help

Last night was the first time for me to drag this 89 trans am, 305, tbi, full 3" exhuast, free flow cat, headders, tbi and injector spacer, 14*3 Open element, edelbrock performer intake, and ultimate tbi mods. I even ran a short belt that left the smog pump, ac pulley, and the power steering pulley out of the belt circulation. I am an auto. And this is what i got at the track.
Reaction: .73
60': 2.24
1/8: 10.6
1/8 mph: 65
1/4: 16.90
mph: 80.97
Disappointed i was and i have a good 1/8. It was only .4 off of my friends run of a 15.4. I believe my problem is in my top end. What can i do to liven the ponies at that range. I want a 15.2 or better. What do i have to do? Suggestions please.

Whats your elevation? You got some problems, I ran 17.0 @ 79 mph at 3500 ft- STOCK!
That's a 16.2 at sea level.

Sounds to me like something is out of tune or you have a crossed plug wire or something, similar thing happened to another member of this board.. ran like 17s and then fixed the plug wire and hit 15.2

I went to the track for the first time last week. I knew my car needed a tune up, so I was gonna run then find out what a tune up would do for it.

I ran around 18, I figured I'd get 17's. This week I changed the plugs and set the timing, it was 4 degrees ATDC(ahhhh).

I didn't get to go this week because damned old John Force and Kenny Berstein and the guys are using the track. I'll see what it did for me next week.

The car is fully tuned up. I change the oil every 3,000 miles or sooner, change the antifreeze about every 6 months, brand new bosch 4 plugs, new msd 9 mm wires, firing order is correct, and all the vacuum lines are correct. I wish it was something to do with the tuning. The car is running smooth and everything else and feels good, but the track time was disappointing. I think my elevation is somewhere around 3,700 or so. Pretty high above sea level, but that time is ridiculous. Any ideas. What a day, its got me all thinking now. Any other ideas would be great. And thanks for the help.

3700 feet? in texas? you sure?

Just because youve done a tunup doesnt mean something is not out of tune. For example.. do you know or not whether your TPS is seeing beyond 4 volts at WOT? If not that would definately account for a very bad 1/4 mile time, youve also not mentioned anything about your timing or anything

it could be lots of things

Yes, check the little things. There is so much more to a tune up than plugs and wires. Did you check your timing? Do you know if you are running rich or lean? Like Pablo said, check the readings on your tps, etc. With those mods you should have a higher mph, something IS out of whack, you just can't see it with the naked eye. Just because it idles smooth and runs good does not mean there is something holding you back. Just speaking from experience

Something's definitely not right there. My 305 TBI has the headers, 3" cat, 3" cat-back, 14 x 3" open element, injector spacer, matched injectors, and a modified TBI on an otherwise stock engine. With that I've run a 15.4 @ 92

The Timing is correct and i had it professionally done. It is 6 btdc. Thats where its suppose to be, but i didnt know about the tps and ive heard about lean and rich mixtures, but i dont know how to check these two things. If i could get some response on HOW TO that would be great. I would like to see something small fix this problem and to get me into the 15's. Thanks again guys

Im guessing you have a chiltons manual. The procedure for setting TPS is in there as well as in the tech section of this website. As far as lean or rich goes, if youve not messed with the fuel pressure or injector sizes you wont have a problem there unless you have a faulty part thats either locked open like an injector overly enriching your mixture or one thats clogged as well as many other things it could be.

Ive never messed with the fuel regulator so that should be alright and the same goes for the injectors. For the tps i will go to the manual or to the tech article.

btw one trick that hte manual wont tell you is this

use the sharp probes to shove into the back of the connector (NOT THROUGH THE WIRES) just into where the wires go in.. much easier than to devise some sort of wires between the tps and plug, i just stick the probes into the back of the plug. You might get conflicting reports on where to set tps.. and your tps may not even be adjustable (easy to fix though just grind the screw holes a little larger)

the main thing is that at idle your tps is not above 1.25 volts and at WOT its beyond 4 volts. The best setup is to set your tps for the lowest idle voltage that still provides for beyond 4 volts WOT but its not super important. I believe mine is set around .9 at idle and goes well past 4 at wot just for good measure

Good luck, just keep hacking away at it methodically, youll figure it out.
