Re: Hot Cam Kit

No. Not on a stock one. Way too much lift for the stock heads (even with upgraded springs). Plus it's just generally too much cam for a little 305 TBI engine.

If you want something better than stock (and you should since the stock cam is super-wimpy) installing a stock LT1 cam from a later 4th Gen Camaro/Firebird is a popular and effective upgrade on the L03, WITH PROPER CHIP TUNING TO MATCH. Most guys pick them up for peanuts in good/used condition on ebay and such.

Re: Hot Cam Kit

I believe those heads have a 64cc combustion chamber. The stock heads have a combustion chamber size of 58CC, so you will be lowering you compression ratio. The heads may work with that cam, but your combo seems to be going in the wrong direction. Tell us a little more about your car such as exhaust upgrades, fuel system upgrades, any mods that have been done to the engine and we'll be able to help you out more. Are you prepared to do chip tuning? The changes to the engine you are suggesting such as cam and head swap will pretty much require chip changes.

Not trying to get you down, just trying to help.

Re: Hot Cam Kit

cam still has too much lift even for the vortechs. even with 1.5's itll have too much lift as i believe its rated at .525 .525 with 1.6 rockers. youd have to get the heads cut down or different retainers or locks to fit. even then youll have a hell of a time tuning tbi for that cam.

Speak for yourself. The MAF setup on the PCM will handle it pretty darn well with minimal changes, although I would do a PRODUCTION LT4 cam.

The production LT4 cam in a ported swirly head 305 will run HARD, IF you know how to properly dial it in and have the proper intake/exhaust modifications to make it run.

Re: Hot Cam Kit

I've tuned a few hot cam setups in MPI systems and the idle is much more stable than my comp 264 which I'm running with TBI. The hot cam is completely tunable on TBI, I just wouldn't recomend it for the newby.

As for the heads, I would get the vortecs and get them cut for the increased lift. Even with the compression drop you'll be way ahead of the stock heads. Nothing like making 300+ hp on 87 octane.

Don't forget that they made good 305 Vortec heads, they carry the last 3 digits of 059 on the casting number.

Re: Hot Cam Kit

then again there are engine quest heads that offer a 50cc chamber with the vortec design and clearance for .575 lift, in aluminum no less for about 800 a pair.www.enginequest.com
