89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
what kinda gas mileage should i be expecting? i drive it all year long and i have been getting horible mileage. and i dont know whether its because its winter or its becasue something is broken.
im getting a bit more then half of the mileage i was getting last summer. everything sounds fine and looks fine, no weird sounds when i drive. just wondering if you guys had any suggestions how to boost my mileage up a bit?
thanks guys!!

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
Im having the same problem. when i bought my car it got 20+ mpg. Then i cut the cat out and was gettin like 18mpg. Now i can fill my tank, use cruise wherever i go and only go 200 miles if that on a full tank. Im in the same ballpark and would also like an answer. (I just changed pulgs, wires, dist. cap, rotor also hoping that would help and have ran fuel injector cleaner also) and still NO BETTER!! im thinking fuel filter maybe?

i bought the car and it had recent plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, and i ran the fuel injectr cleaner also. last week i brought the car to my mechanic and he changed the fuel filter and the oil for me. and i didnt see a huge difference. today i just cleaned out my air filter so i will see what that does.

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air and fuel filter done about 6 months ago.
Oil changed about 1000 miles ago.
Pulled down 13.7 miles to gallon two weeks ago when it was really cold out.
Now that its (slightly) warmer out, pulled out 15.7 miles to the gallon.

With conservative driving I get 15~18mpg average. With "spirited" driving I get 8~12mpg. Your right foot really determines your MPG.

I've been getting 13-14 mpg (suburban, 5-10mi driving) consistantly all winter. At least when I don't allow it to idle excessively.
This last tank I got a freakish 17mpg; not sure if its the slightly warmer weather, the freshly cleaned k&n or if they've switched the gas up already. But I ain't complaining!

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
I think its a combination of the factors. In the winter, I have to let the car idle for a bit before I drive in the morning. Also, the winter gas sucks. Also, the cold air might cause the ECM to richen the mixture. So...
Because, in the summer I was able to pull off 32mpg on the highway, low 20's around town. When it was real cold, I was around 12mpg in town. Now, its more like 16mpg on premium.
I also get better milage on premium, no idea why. It might be because it stops my knock problem. Probably has a better additive package too. But I know this winter, I only pulled off 23mpg on the same drive that I got consistant 30's in the summer.

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
Man, all this talk about 20+ mpg makes me wonder if it wouldn't pay off to do a good tune and a fluids... But then again, I'll probably bike everywhere this summer anyhow; especially if gas goes through the roof like they predict.

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
I was just going through a bunch of receipts I need to file for my car, and I came across a gas slip from July '06 when I took the car on a 700 mile trip to ME and back. The first fillup, mostly 70-75 highway driving, netted 25.4 on fresh plugs and a full tune up How anyone can get more than 26-27, I don't understand...my M5 was only rated for 26 highway, and its a known fact older EPA ratings are optimistic at best...
With that said, I've always been happy with the MPG of my TBI. I don't drive it every day, but it gets 17-19 around town, 23-25 highway...right within spec for when the car was new.

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
I got headers and a three inch catback "to save fuel." Right.
The better breathing of the car makes it easier to burn gas. Von Kaiser said it right. Lead foot is my problem. Then again, I just added a new rear axle with 3.27's from 2.73. Can I expect that my in-town mileage will improve because it won't take as much pedal to reach speed?
I'll let you know.

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
Never avg. less than 20 MPG with my car in good tune, and it usually gets 22/23 MPG, and has pulled 30MPG on long trips. Had a O2 sensor go bad once and then the MPG dropped a lot. My car is a T-5 with the 3.08 rear gears.

Re: 89 LO3 Gas Mileage...
What will kill my highway milage, is the "habbit" I have to go WOT on the on-ramps, and also the habbit of not letting *****s pass me.

Hey Uncle Tom. I am getting 15mpg around town running my air. Don`t know about hwy mpg. yet but I`m guessing/hoping well over 20. I`ve got a 600 mile road trip the end of next month so I will find out.

I can see that easy, my TBI 305 powered fullsize van with 3.08 gears and a 700r4 pulled down 23 mpg on a road trip to Corpus Christi a few years back. Running 70 mph with the A/C blasting and 6 people and their stuff in it.
