I am planning on changing to an open element air cleaner. I have read that some people have clearance issues with the dropped design, so my question is what what would be better a flat designed base or a raised design? will the raised base have any hood clearance issues?

For me the drop struck the throttle shaft lever. I used a 1 inch spacer with a flat base.

OBTW I have one for sale in classifieds with a KN AC. Better than that I have a carb bonnet as well 4 sale that can be ducted so as to allow cold air set up.

I have a flat base, I removed the gold spacer ring on top of the TBI unit.

I went ahead and went with a Proflow flat base element from summit racing, only cost like 25$ hopefully I wont have any problems with it touching the coil.

It's the drop base ones that you have to worry about touching the coil, not the flat base.

what I've always wondered is if the drop base touches the coil then why do some people get it if you have to get a spacer to make it work. is there some other advantage to having a drop base?

No, it's actually better to get a flat base. Because you remove the restrictive gold spacer ring. With a drop base, you have to keep that spacer ring. Although, a drop base would allow you to use a TBI spacer, (the one that goes under the TBI unit), or a taller intake I suppose.

ok so I've got my flat base air cleaner installed but I noticed at first it was really close to the coil wires so my question is how close is to close? they arent touching but not far from it. as for now i just left the gold ring on there to raise it up but that looks kinda funny.

I'm not sure how to upload the pics I've taken of it tho.
