Cam question

i was reading in the closed thread, NEW to TBI that you need to use a roller cam shaft in 88 and newer TBI. why is that? edelbrock makes a cam shaft and solid lifter package for this engine, is it junk? i was thinking about upgradeing to it. should i go with something else?

your 89 has a hydrualic roller cam from the factory, crane used to make a solid roller designed to be used in our engines, but crane went away so I don't know where you'd get them, but the were expensive.

why a solid flat? do you plan to keep it fuel injected? if you do, ditch the solid flat it'll set off your knock sensors all day(a solid roller prob would too).

what do you want out of the car? how much do you plan to spend?

Re: Cam question

Well actually I have this cam in my car, also have the edelbrock tbi intake, Shorty headers to 2 1/2 flow master exhaust with cat delete. Underdrive aluminum pulleys, 160' stat with a hypertech chip, tbi spacer, and a 12" open air filter. It seems to run good with no codes or anything. I would like to get a little more out of it. I have a pair of vortec heads from a 305 and a vortec carb intake I want to put on. I was just gonna make a plate to put my tbi on. I was thinking about carb but don't know what it takes to convert it. Any help/ideas/thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks

Re: not a Cam question

well if your motor still has swirl ports, the vortecs would make a good bit of difference, but they may need to be clearenced for the lift of your cam.if you want to switch to carb, check the carb board, all the info yoou need is over there.

I would re tune it, the more efficient heads will allow more air in, and lean out you exsisting tune.
