Open Element Questions
I have an 88 Camaro with the 305 TBI. Everything is stock.
I want to replace the stock air cleaner with an open element air cleaner. I've searched everywhere and cannot find all the information I need. So here are my questions:
1) Should I get a drop or non-drop base? If drop, do I need a spacer?
2) Will a 3 inch tall filter fit under my hood?
3) That golden spacer ring thing between the throttle body and the air cleaner, what do I do with that?
Basically, I want an open element air cleaner that will fit, and not interfere with any other workings of the engine. If you could point me to specific parts that I would need, that would be great.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'm sorry if I missed a thread somewhere that already has all this information in it.
Would this one work? http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/50022...oductId=751908

Re: Open Element Questions
Link doesn't work, sends me to JEGS homepage.
I saved money and modified my stock air cleaner, and it works pretty well. Of course, this is only temporary until I think of something better.

Open element is really only 100% good when the engine is cool. But the amount of extra volume it sucks in is a benefit regardless of the air being warm. Although, do know a proper cold air intake will perform many times better.

Re: Open Element Questions
The link in the first post still works.
I like what you did with your stock cleaner. I'll take that into consideration.

Re: Open Element Questions
Great. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Thank you.
Will this work for the valve cover breather? http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/4405/10002/-1

Re: Open Element Questions
As long as your valve covers have the correct size hole. Removing the rubber grommet should make it the correct size on the stock covers.

No problem, I'm glad to help. Just one suggestion, search a little more thoroughly, the stickies have the best info.

Re: Open Element Questions
Be careful the drop bottom dose not rest on the coil. I am using a drop bottom and had to use a 1/2 in. plastic spacer that sits on top of the stock steel one to give me the space I needed. I also wrapped the coil wires with wire loom and electrical tape were it comes closest to the lid. Also used electrical tape on the bottom of the drop bottom plate were it comes closest to the coil. If your worried about the filter top hitting the hood with the new spacer you can do as I did and place a ball of play-doh or soft clay on top of the lid and close the hood softly to smash the doh. Do this without the "new" spacer . When you open the hood measure the thickness of the doh and that will give you the space left between the filter top and the hood. You may even want to put a ball of doh near the front edge of the filter top to check for hood slope. (To be safe I would unhook the battery.)
