Egr problems when intake changed?

I was wondering when you change your intake and the EGR is then removed won't it cause issues? I read somewhere that it will cause a SES light and a spark advance. When I do my 350 vortec swap I planned on using an ECU from a 91-92 TBI350 truck and no EGR or smog/air pump.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

Yes, not disabling the EGR function in the calibration can cause a SES light, lean running and detonation (on a stock engine). On a Vortec engine it will not likely cause detonation, but will likely cause a SES.

Going with an engine using Vortec heads is going to require tuning, otherwise it will be a dog.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

Depends upon what you mean by a custom PROM, it will need tuning. And more fuel pressure and/or larger injectors. The Vortec engines make more power then the L03 engines. Plus you are going from 305 ci of displacement to 350 ci of displacement.

The stock 5.0l 55#/hr injectors at 22 psi are good for 270 HP. At 30 psi they are good for 316 HP.

You might not want to go to the 92 truck 299 ecm, nothing wrong with the 746 ecm. Take a look at rbob's ebl

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

I read about the ebl and don't really understand how it works. I know about the injectors, I thought I could go to the salvage yard and grab an ECU and injectors out of a 350 truck. So if I grab injectors from a truck what needs to be done to my stock 305 ecu to make it work? Also won't my 305 dizzy work since I have a 92 and the ESC is located with the prom and not on the firewall like the older third gens?

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

I am pretty much confused on what exactly I need for the 92 because its a little different than the 89 and older cars.. correct? What I want is to use the vortec motor for more HP than the old gen1 350 headed block.
-Weiand Stealth 4bbl carb intake with TBI adapter (No EGR or any emissions crap because I don't need)
-Shorty Hedman 68470 headers with Hedman 17478 2.5" Y pipe
-2.5" mid pipe because thats all I can find
-TBI mods
-Maybe change the cam and rockers like most people suggest.

I want to start buying parts one at a time as I get paid. I want to make sure I know exactly what I need before I buy it. I have a decent chunk of money coming in August (about 3k) and plan on using this to buy the motor, tires, and have the 700R-4 upgraded.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

Can anyone help me with answering the ESC module question? I have a 92 and was led to believe that the ESC is part of the prom. I am extremely confused please help!

I found a guy on ebay that sells the programmer and software to make your own chips for $200.(includes UV light) I think this may be over my head as I am a better mechanic than computer guy! I am leaning towards paying him $100 to just custom make me a chip.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

On tbi the esc module is located on your bulk head next to your master cylinder.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

Check the letter/numbers on your esc module you should be able to use it with a 89-90 caprice L05 knock sensor I believe the tbi 88-92 trucks knock sensor is the same you would need to cross reference the pn.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

truth of the matter is you're going to need tuning. So whether you get Rbob's FLASH EBL, or have someone burn you a custom chip multiple times over it is gonna have to be done. You need a plan. You need to know how much power you wanna make, then you can figure out what fuel injectors you're gonna need and all that.

Re: Egr problems when intake changed?

If you stay with the 746 ecm moates.net G2 , a burn 2 and sst27sf512 would be the lower dollar option. A plan and budget would be the first things you should have in mind.
