Exactly nothing. The stock ignition has no problem keeping the fire lit on anything but the hottest combinations.

Ed is right a msd 6 wont' give you any more power. All it does is give you a more complete fuel burn which the stock unit you have on your 89 should be more then up to the task. If you have a 87 earlyer distributor then the msd will give you more spark above arround 5k. I have one so I can use it for the soft touch rev limiter and for an ignition retard for my nitrous system.

Depends. Did you also install the enclosed "MSD Ignition" sticker?

You also need to consider whether or not your old stock ignition was operating at 100% capacity. You probably could have installed a brand new OEM ignition and gained the exact same 8 hp and 20 miles per tank. Your really comparing apples and oranges when you replace a used part with a new part from a different manufacturer.

If an MSD box was worth power on a stock motor, don't you think i'd be running one? Notice my car is basically stock, and also one of the heaviest thirdgens off the line yet it runs pretty well. If an MSD was such cheap easy HP why wouldn't i use one, just so i can make smart *** comments on a message board.

I've never heard a single real gain from anybody that is respectable except for on cars that 'need it'. And that includes being at the track and doing back to back runs and seeing the same timeslips on a couple of cars.

The stock ignition has no problem making a spark in the kind of RPM range and cylinder pressure that naturally aspirated street engines make (well most anyway) . It's not like it makes a spark but it doesn't completely light the mixture. Thats called a miss. And it's indicative of poor tuning or a malfunction. The fact that so many cars have made solid power on stock ignitions is proof of that.

First you just ordered it. Now you have dyno results. Isn't it past your bed time?

Probably because your stock ignition system was so used that any new wires/coil/etc. would have given you a bit more power on a dyno than your 13 yr old stock wires and HEI

Ed is right.

Hell, I installed one to replace my 40 yr old POINTS distributor, and it did not do anything!!!! 14.2@ 98 before, 14.2@98 after.

Point is, even a 1930's technology breaker point distributor works fine for most mild n/a applications. YOU WILL SEE NO GAINS FROM UPGRADING!

You should have ditched the TBI and bought a carb with the money you spend on the MSD!

I've had the box, coil, and wires on my car for about a year now. No diff. except I picked up a few more mpg and thats probably from replacing the old stuff.
Later Barrett

And my point is that if you're just here to stir up bull****, you're going to find yourself banned pretty fast. Consider this a warning.
