somehting smoked near the batt, now i have no voltage.,....batt fried?? anything else that could fry from this??

You may have blown a fusible link. Pull the cables off the battery and hook a voltmeter up to it, it should read 11-12 volts. If not then your battery is shot. If it's got voltage then check your fusible links and your fuses inside the car, a quick jolt should not be enough to smoke your battery, but may be enough to throw a fuse.

I did that and blew a fusable link near the battery. Its on a block directly beside the battery.

wasnt a quick jolt, it was the valve cover welded to the alt terminal lol.....so i had the alt checked and sho' nuff its dead heh. but now, with new alt and new batt, batt is still dying....how do i replace the link....anyone have a pic of it???

on the wire from the back of the alt, follow it to the battery, there's a black plastic piece built in to the line, that's the fusible link, and if it did that kind of damage to the alternator, I would definitely check that one out first. Just cut it out and bypass it, you can plumb a new one in there with little difficulty. Also check your cooling fan fuse, a 25 amp fuse in the block. I know it sounds strange, but the alternator circuit goes through that fuse.

cool deal, found the problem, fixed it...all is good ..kinda, now i gotta see why the hell i have to have my timing jacked up to 18-20 advanced to get the car to run right

check your ECM for a code 53 the surge from that wire may have caused a system overvoltage fault.

ecm was cleared after i took the batt out

Where did the timing sit before the little 'incident' with the alt.?



edit: one more thing run the engine and see if any more codes come up, you may be having problems with the EST control.

Do you have a spair ECM to swap out and test that.

Might have fried a ecm... Ive seen weirder **** happen.

that's gotta suck. I see you have some other posts here about various engine changes/modifications. Tell me did you change the cam in this engine and have the problem with the alt before you ran it the first time?
