Cam questions
I got a my new comp cam today. its a 282 grind. solid lifters, .495 lift and 236 duration @ .050. do you guys thing this would be to much for a street/strip 406 or just right. i have a 2400 stall convertor, do you quys thing this is enough stall.

That's probably going to equate to a lot of overlap. That might be a problem on a smaller displacement engine with low gearing, but your displacement and higher stall speed converter should make the grind tolerable. Higher RPM flows should be very respectable.
As for the stall speed, the rating is usually given for the designed stall with a nominal engine. You larger engine and likely increased torque are going to raise the actual stall speed above 2,400 RPM. How much is anyone's guess, but it will almost certainly be higher behind a 406.
The biggest nuisance you'll have with the combination is the need for frequent lash adjustment. Keep lots of rocker cover gaskets on hand, since even the rubber ones don't last forever.

i've never done anything with a 400, but i'd be looking for a little more lift, something around .550. as you know you'll need more stall and lower gears with more cam and i'd guess the power band wouldn't start till around 3000.

What do you have for heads? If your heads rpm range match your cam, you should be fine. I've seen alot of people go crazy on the cam and have mild heads that don't match. It that situation, the cam hurts the bottom of the powerband and the heads hurt the top end of the powerband. Everything needs to match.

I used to have that cam in my 400... it was excellent. I still have the cam & lifters, I carefully preserved them and may re-use them someday, even after 115k miles. I had 1.6 roller tip rockers (1416) on it.
It has that serious racing lope to it. No possibility of anyone mistaking it for a sleeper. It gave me plenty of bottom end torque, enough to break the tires loose at under 1000 RPM with the clutch already fully engaged and the engine idling; but pulled strong to 6000.
However, it did not work particularly well with my computer-controlled Q-Jet and distributor... go figure... I ended up with a Holley 6211 and a DUI.

It will work quite nicely, I have put that cam on a 350! with a 2600rpm converter. and it was on the borderline of tollerable for daily driving, if its a racer it will be fine. And since you have a 406 it will probably be a ok street driver. It will hurt your gas mpg a little though.
