My car is having major problems starting, just when it seems it just about to start then it wont. I just changed the distrubutor, the little modual under the rotor, rotor, plug wires. I put new plugs in in october but the carb had been acting funny so that was fixed, so what I am thinking is that during the carb repair the plugs had been fouled with all the rich and lean fuel mixtures that were going into the combustion chambers. But that doesn't explain why my battery is smoking. Its coming from the positive pole on the battery. If it is any cosolation When my car was running great awile back my battery would be dead if I didn't drive it every other day. So could the smoke and the battery drain be related, and could the battery problem cause my car not to start? well here is some info on my car. 1986 camaro, 305 V8, carbed, automatic. Also when it tryes to start it the exhause make a puffing noise, kindof like the cat is all messed up or cloged. All I need to do is get the damn thing running so I drive it the 4 miles into town and get it to a shop. Well any help would be great, And I thank you for your time in reading this.

I would look at 3 things.
1-Is anything shorted out, my guess, probably not.
2-Bad battery. Take it to Autozone and have them do a load test.
3-Bad Starter. Again, take it to Autozone and have it tested.
My even be both 2 and 3.

You can do a load test yourself, with a friend of course. If you own a voltage meter, test the voltage of the battery and hold it there while some one tries to start the car. Basically it the voltage drops to zippo, your battery cannot take a load. More than likely, recharging won't work if it's had trouble this long.

If you don't have a voltage meter, (YOU REALLY SHOULD), then by all means take the battery in.

If the starter engages, it's probably not shorting out on you, although it does happen if you drive in a lot of wet and muddy conditions.

As far as the short goes, I agree, that's not it.

Does it only smoke when you are trying to start it??

Usually when it puffs smoke while cranking, its an indication of a bad connection.

Heh, I remember helping a guy in a green Camaro- his car died on the highway, so I helped him push it off onto a side street. I asked him what's wrong, and he said it died, and he didn't know. He had the hood popped and said "that wire is smoking, though." I looked- his positive battery cable melted on the exhaust! Oops.
