Trip odometer stuck

My trip odometer is suck at 000.0! It was giving problems before it stopped working. For instance, the numbers would not move in sequence. Has anyone had this problem? If so, how'd you fix it? I'm afraid to mess with the odometer, which is working fine. However, I would like to get that trip odometer working.

Welcome to GM trip meters. They break alot. I'd guess probably fewer than 20% of all the ones more than 12 years old still work.

I know of no way to fix it, short of replacing it. However if you do that, get a 145 MPH speedo, and spend your trip meter replacement money on one of those (the trip meter is different) rather than on the 85 MPH one if that's what you've got.

I have the 145 MPH speedo. Sh*t!

I just wanted to know if (by taking out the pod) it could be fiddled with to get it to work.

I have one 85 and 2 145s; the only one with a working trip meter is one of the 145s. The 85 and the 145 versions are exactly the same except just different enough not to interchange.

Maybe you can buy one at the dealer, or from a speedo repair place, I don't know. Good luck!

Mine doesnt work anymore either!

It worked fine for like a year then one day I look down at it and the numbers are all going every which way! They spin all different ways all weird.

I'd like to fix it if possible but looks like I'll be buying a new speedo eh?

Yeah, mine did do the same thing until it just stopped turning altogether. I figure it has something to do with a spring or catch pawl that isn't catching. I wonder if it could just be hooked back into place?

On another related story, I'd like to buy one of those all digital dashboards. I wonder if you have to start the odometer at 00000.0 though... If you did, I wouldnt want to do the swap.

My 86' Iroc with a 145 speedo also has a bad tripmeter. I just can't see spending the 225.00 for the new assembly right now.

There is a way to fix it. I asked this question once and Vader knew how to fix it, I didn't do it, but if he explained it again I might want to.

Not anything of great importance, but you can add my IROC to the list of screwed-up trip-meters. Mine still spins, but the 1st two numbers seem stuck together. At least I'm getting some of the best gas milage of any internal combustion engine I've runs across so far (if I were to believe my tripometer), a whopping 886 miles to one tank!!!

I saw his post after I gave up on mine. The problem is that the entire mechanism is held against the drive gear by two small plastic "hooks". The hooks break at the attach point, then no more trip OD. I tried re-gluing mine, no go.

His fix is to remove the broken hooks, drill a very small hole where they mount, and epoxy in a piece of paperclip bent into the shape of the original plastic hook. There is one on each side. I haven't done it, but it sounds like the right approach. Just watchmaker-type detail work.

My '90 Bonneville SSE w/120k miles trip odometer works fine. It's almost 12 years old. Same for '91 Bonneville with about same mileage. Not all GM trip odometers are made cheap - but ours sure are.
