good 400 set up??

What do you think of this for a TPI 400.
1) Ported Plenum, Edelbrock base, SLP siameased runners.
2) Air Foil, K&N, 52mm TB
3) Hooker Super Comp Headers
4) 3" Cat-back
5) Sportsman II heads
6) Comp Cam Xtreme Energy Cam,
Lift: .477/.480
RMp Range: 1600-5800
Comp Cam Xtreme Energy Cam
Lift: .462/.469
RPM Range: 1300-5600
(Which Cam)
8) Comp Cams 1.5 Roller Rockers
9) would 22lbs injectors work with a AFPR??

The first cam; absolutely 1.6 rockers, do the work to the heads to get the good springs on them; and no, 22 lb/hr injectors won't even feed a 350 warmed up that much.

I am debating between this and a 350. I would like the 400, will there be any major problems with the 400 as compared to the 350?

Go with the 30lb. injectors and have the chip calibrated for them. As far as building up a 400, nothing real special or magical about building one up. Just remember to get the steam holes drilled out in the heads. Go with a competent engine builder and you shouldn't have any problems.

biggest issue is you will not be able to use the knock sensor. 400s would knock at a different pitch. I don't think anybody makes a 400 KS.

if you care about cost at all (by your mods it sounds like you dont) you can build a 350 up a heck of a lot cheaper and spend the money you saved on other mods for it.

should not be a problem. there are guys on the lt1 board at camz28.com that are running without them.

And yea, you could build a 350 for less. But, the money that you save (that would could be used in other areas), would not make the torque increase the 400 gives. except for NOS . Get some good heads and a comp cam XE roller and 480-500 hp is very easy. And its all there by 5500 rpm.

Actually, with a tpi, you start running out of airflow about 4500. TPIS only got 395 hp at 4250 and 4500 on a 400 with a solid roller and brodix heads. It did have 500 lbs/ft of torque.

If your going to use sportmans I would have someone work them over. they arn't the best out of the box.

what about fast burns or vortec, i am only looking for around 375hp, and 415 ft/lbs, the T-56 is rated up to 450 ft/lbs and i don't want to blow that so i will leave a 35 ft/lbs buffer zone. If i used the above modes on a 350 would i get these numbers, i would like to have a 400 b/c it is more rare then the 350 and 383 buildups. It would be nice to get this out of a 305 but it would cost too much...WAY too much.

I picked up a 400 for my ROC last week.

Tell me more about this Knock sensor problem with the 400. I have never heard about this before. Your saying that people are running their FI w/out this? WTF?

Running without a knock sensor just doesn't make sense to me. Would you rather get false knock acompanied by spark retard or get real knock with no spark retard? I run a knock sensor in my 400 and it works fine. I also use an Accel DFI so I and can watch the knock sensor activity real time.

modified vipers and vetts are 650+ hp and stock t56s are holding up no problem. Fast burns would be the best choice, but I think the intake bolt pattern is different than tpi.

Many combinations get false knocks due increased vibration and noise in the motor. The condition is usually addressed by burning a custom chip and setting the timing to a curve that will prevent knock. Once an engine combination has been optimized, a knock sensor is no longer needed because you have determined how close the engine is to knocking and designed a fuel/timing curve to address it.

You'd have to get the Scoggin Dickey TPI baseplate for Vortecs (not quite available yet IIRC, no price listed yet either) if you want to run the fastburns w/ TPI. Or there is the new MiniRam for Vortecs, that would work well...

Instead of the Sportman IIs try the Dart Iron Eagles in 200cc. They flow slightly better and are nearly the same price. You can get them w/ 1.437" springs vs the Sportman IIs 1.250"ers. Here's a chart that has a flow comparo... <a href="http://www.inter-scape.com/ray/headstest/headstest_6.jpg">Chart</a> The Iron Eagles also have a better intake/exhaust flow ratio. Should be able to get a set of 200cc Iron Eagles w/ 1.437" springs for $850ish at worst.

I don’t know about that knock sensor problem. I’ve build and used a few injected 400’s for myself and friends and have NEVER had a problem with the knock sensor. I’ve always used the stock knock sensor. I also know of a few guys that use a 400 and not have a problem with the knock sensor either. They’ve used the stock one also. I’m pretty interested in this knock sensor problem you brought up JCB999.
As far as the 350 being a cheaper motor to build, maybe by a hundred dollars or two, definitely not by a significant amount. The machine work I’ve had done was always the same cost as the 350’s, 383’s and 400’s I’ve built. Rebuilt cranks will cost the same amount and aftermarket cranks were usually no more than 30-50 dollars more. Pistons were the same amount but never 30-50 dollars more. Rods, well I use the same one you would use in a 350, 5.7”-6.0”.
As far as going with Fastburn heads, there are plenty of aftermarket heads out there that I would run instead. AFR, TFS, Brodix, Canfield, etc. etc. etc. Sure the Fastburns are different, but your options for induction manifolds for them aren’t as great.

my personal experience is limited to only what I have read and the logic behind a knock. Aren't the knock sensors different on 305s and 350s?

In the following LT1 thread, they talk about hearders and or roller rockers triggering a false knock (http://web.camaross.com/bb/Forum1/HTML/054599.html )
I allways thought those LT1 motors were kind of brain dead myself.

I guess it is possible that there is enough commonallity in a hard knock to trip the sensor regardless how much of a difference in displacement there is. When a motor knocks, it kind of sounds pretty consistent.

I run a resistor in place of the knock sensor. I get no retard and full timing at all times.

No, but one other question for ya, if you are doing all this work, why not ditch the stock TPI and get something from accell? I know it might not bolt on to the current intake, but I think you would get a much better air flow. See what others think, as I am no expert
