Engine dies after cold start...

Basically, it's like the choke isn't working but I really don't think that is the problem because I put on my spare carb and it's no different. BTW the car is a 84Z28 LG4, Qjet, T5, non-computer.

It (the choke) worked fine last summer (on both carbs), but after my recent cam swap when I start the car I have to depress the gas pedal a little to keep it from stalling. I tried adjusting the 2 screws on the passenger side but nothing would up the idle. The choke plate closes, the pull off opens it a crack, and the wire that connects to it has 12V - so it should be fine right? Once the engine has warmed up it purrs like a kitten at 750 rpm.

So, does anything effect choke operation like vacuum, timing, ect. Could the new cam be causing a low vacuum at idle or something? It's a Comp XE250 206/212 .432/.444 LS 110.

I would have posted this in the carb section but as I said I don't think that's the problem. Thanks.

Well My LG4 with a Bigger Cam ( 262) idles easily at 500 rpm In gear.

After I swapped To another Carb, But as you said thats not your problem. Look For Vaccum leaks, especialyl from intake to lifter valley.

Justy, I have the same problem you could call it. I have a 292H from Comp Cams. Honestly I think it is just one of those sacrifices to performance. Since we have no computers and bigger cams, logically the engines need more gas. When mine gets about half way in temp, then it will idle fine till it is completely warmed. Anything beforethat and i am holding down the pedal.

The verdict is in... "Initial timing retarded"

I figured out that my distributer had to be almost fully advanced to even start the engine. So, I reinstalled the distributer one tooth forward (had to move the oil pump a bit) and now I have some advance to play with. Started and choke came on first try! I adjusted the timing & choke from there and now it works great. A spin around the block proved a little more advance was in order too!
