Hey all. I think my temperature sensor is faulty, and i posted earlier about this, and was informed it was between the #6 and #8 cylinders on the heads. Well, I read the electrial information on my car, and found out that there should be a yellow and black wire running from it, to my ECU. I didn't see the thermo sensor anywhere between the #6 and #8 cylinder head. I DID however, see a sensor plugged in (with a black and yellow wire) RIGHT UNDERNEATH the throttle body, (looks like its right where the coolent passes through, in the engine itself, below where most people bypass the throttle body coolant line) Does anyone know if this is the sensor or not? The peice looks like its connected with a huge hexnut at the end of it, and at the tip is a little electrical harness, with the two wires, yellow and black, like my Haynes manuel says) running out if it at the tip. Please respond if you have any information, I am working on my car right now, while im at work. Im out of commision untill i get some more information. well you will have anywhere between 1 and 3 temp sensors. one is for the computer, which i think is the one you're talkin about. it should be located in the thermostat housing. there is also one for the temp gauge (if you have one..i think most 3rd gens do) this will be (i'm pretty sure...) in the driver's side head, between the #1 and 3 cylinders. the third would be for an electric radiator fan, if you have one. i think this will either be located in the pass. side head (between #6 and 8 cyl.)or possibly in the radiator. based on this info, figure out which one you need and where it is. if you get a new one from the parts store, take the old one w/ you and match it up (its confusing, as the 3 sensors are all different) the one for the computer is the engine temp. sensor, the one for the gauge is the coolent temp senor (i might have the 2 confused) but the fan one will be called a rad. fan turn-on switch. hope this helps! good luck

oh btw if the one for the computer is bad, it will throw a code....

Got both the comptuer sensor, and the #6 -#8 electric fan sensor.

Had to get a jack, stands, sensors, socket wrench set, etc. Looks like the problem might be the electric fan sensor, the one located in the most pain in the *** place.

About to install a new one here in the middle of the night, outside of my work office. hehehe.

Anyway, when i short A and B on the ALDL the fan comes on! Does that mean that electric fan temperature switch is faulty? Or what?

§hit, well, i got the wrong part, and now my car is in peices.

The temperature sensor located between the #8 and #6 cylinders looks broken, but its much bigger than the replacement part i have. I think i purchased the wrong part (although i don't know, because the guy pulled up all of the information, for the correct car.)

Anyway, on the thermo sensor, It has this number. Is it a GM number for the part?

DR562 N085 (the 0 could be a O)

the gm p#'s a dont know about...like i said your best bet is to go to a parts store w/ the old part and tell them thats the one you need!!

are you talking about the one right in front of the starter?

that's the knock sensor... coolant temp sensors are only in the heads..

the one that will throw a code is on the front of your intake manifold (if you have TPI) and the one for the gauges/fans is on the driver side head between 1-3 plugs

Is it single or dual fans?

If its single, there is no temp sensor for the fans on the passenger side at all. The one that controls the fans is the one on the front of the intake, the Coolant Temp sensor, with the yellow and black wires. The sender on the driver side head between the #1 and #3 is for the temp gauge ONLY on every thirdgen on the street.

If you have dual fans, IIRC one fan is controlled by the switch on the passenger side head. Its small in diameter (about 1/2") and has a plastic end sticking out with what looks like a single terminal inside. Thats probably the part you bought. The part you took off sounds like the knock sensor. If it was or looked broken, I would suggest getting a new one.

Your Fan switch sensor is between 6-8, Guage sensor is between 1-3 and the CTS (coolant Temp Sensor) is located in your manifold right under the hose coming form the Throttle Body.

Yes, I went home and did notice that i took out the knock sensor. It wasn't hooked up, and looked broken, so i assumed it was the temperature sensor. It was quite late, so i didn't make the connection when i took it out, that NO COOLENT came out. LOL!

Anyway, I have a single fan in my car. Im not sure if it had dual fans before i bought it.

When i took of the front temperature ECU sensor, (under the throttle body) I noticed the part i bought looked diffrent from the one i installed. The part that was in there had two pin-style connections. The part that i bought had two connections, which looked like a regular applience plug (two prong electrical connectior, like what you plug into a wall socket in your house)

The yellow and blakc wires were running up to the sensor, but they were cut off, and spliced to this diffrent pin-style connector. It looks like whoever had the car before me, might have got a junkyard part, and a wire connector harness for it too, and spliced it all together.

Once i hooked up the new sensor i bought, and aattatched the wires to it, My engine thre me a code "15" which is "thermo temperature sensor bad"

I am going to reverse the connections on the thermo sensor today, just in case it was hooked up backwards (i didn't, and still don't think that makes a diffrence) And also short the yellow and black wires running to it, to see if it will complete the circuit and run the fan.

Oh, one more thing, When i short out my ALDL "A" and "B" (like what you do to read engine codes) My fan comes on!!! What does that mean?

whats the one on the drivers side block with a single slip on looking tab connector? did someone put this in the wrong place?
and I have a yellow wire coming out of the pass. side wire loom down near the starter with a circular connector on it that turns on one of the fans when i touch it to the battery?
I have a 92 350 TPI with dual fans

Where on the driver's side block?


On the driver's side there's only one on the block, two if you count the oil pressure sending unit which is a 1-wire sensor behind the head, but the one in the block above the oil filter is a 2-wire, and is an oil pressure switch used to enable the fuel pump during startups on 88-90 models.

Your 92' should have a 3-wire sensor in place of the 2 shown in the attached picture, except yours is on the block above the oil filter (I didn't like these sensor's stock locations, if i had one like yours I'd left it were it is.

If grounding the wire turns on one of the fans, it should be connected to the heavy duty fan high-temp switch (between 6 & 8cyls.)

The one on the Driver's side block does it look like eiher of these?

rgarcia63 is right, there is only one sensor on the block, but, on the driver's side cylinder head, in between the #1 and #3 spark plugs is the coolant temperature sending unit which has a single-wire slip-on type connector (just like what you mentioned). The coolant temp. sending unit is what your gauge uses to show coolant temp.

The other connector you mention sounds like the coolant fan switch connector. The coolant fan switch is located on the passenger side cylinder head, right in between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. It turns on one of the fans when coolant temp. reachs a certain temperature.

i think i got this figured out
the pass side sensor between 6 and 8 is not there, the wire that i was touching to the battery that turned on the passenger side fan was an extension from a white wire from what i can tell. i guess that was the pass. side sensors wire without the right connector....
now the one on the drivers side is in the picture, is this the right sensor and connector? the connector wont even stay on the sensor. there isnt one on the block on the drivers side only on the pass side block which is the knock sensor

The 92s' Temp sending unit's connector pin could have changed, my 88' has a spade lug type connection.


Found these in asearch for GM temp sensors.
