LG4 or L69???

I have a 91 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI. When I got it I was told the motor was changed with an older 305. He told me it came out of a carburated '86 Camaro. I have to replace the cam and so I ran the head casting numbers and comfirmed that it was an '85 or '86 model year. Upon some research on here I saw that out of a /86 Camaro it could be a LG4 or a L69...I want to know how I can tell the difference...and what is the difference?

All your help will be appreciated.

The advice to try a search is the best.

Does the car have a dual snorkel air cleaner housing? Although not determinative (my LG4 has a dual snorkel because it's a nice upgrade), it is one of the things to look for.

I think the cam was different, but beyond that, what James said.

What difference does it make now? You're not putting a stock cam back in, are you?

Parry... no it doesn't have a dual snorkel air cleaner. It has the original '91 TBI injection system.

Ape... I like to know exactly what I have, I am picky like that.

The LG4 and L69 used the same short block and heads in 1986. The only differences were in the air cleaner, ECM, exhaust and cam, none of which you have anymore.

The L69 also had flattop pistons, as compared to dished in the earlier LG4.

But not in '86!

There were only about 100 L69's delivered in the '86 model year, anyway, so the chances of it being one is very, very slim.

And, as far as the casting #'s go, it could have been an LB9. Same similiarities between an LG4, L69, and LB9 - block, heads, pistons (and crank & rods & rings & bearings, for that matter).

Again, it doesn't make any difference anymore, since the originator doesn't have any of the things that would have been different anymore.

Charman, your sig says you have a 350. Why are you asking about the 305?

(Decatur, huh? Been there. Might be spending more time there, in fact.)

Kid...the 350 is the one I have 1/2 finished sitting on my engine stand...I'm out of money to quite finish it.

For that matter the LE9 305 truck engine is exactly the same too, except they use 14022601 heads instead of 416s.

I guess what I am getting to is even though the engine might have come from an 86 camaro, it might be a 305 from anywhere.
