Key out, engine stays running? PLEASE HELP
Ok, I have a 91 camaro with the 3.1 lier V6. This has only happened 3 times in the last 8 months, but I need to figure out why it happens. When I turn the key off, I pull it out and realize the engine is still running, WTF???? I popped my hood and looked under there wondering what to do, so I shut my hood and the engine shut off. Any ideas on what could be causing this??????? Thanks in advance for your help

Strickly a guess, but I agree with the post about the ignition switch sticking in the "on" position.
The ignition key moves a lever to the actual switch contacts located further down the steering wheel column. With the ignition key out, somehow, someway, the switch contact(s) did not open enough to break the connection.
Slamming the hood was enough to knock the contact(s) to their proper position.
Without having looked at the contacts of this switch to see if this could even be possible, I am at a loss to speculate what else it could be.
Removing this switch and examining it may show something excessively worn or broken. If everything appears normal, can it be opened for examination?
Since it only happened a few times, I would suspect something that has become worn - such as too much slop in the lever moving the switch contacts...

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like a logical explanation. If it doesnt happen for another few months, i probably wont even fool with trying to fix it. Thanks for your help...

There is a rod that actuates the ignition switch. Granted if it is fried it does not preclude the possibility of it being the culprit. Are you sure you were not experiencing run-on? Do you by chance have an MSD ignition?
