Protopline heads

I just won these today. Any good or did i get ripped? They come Thursday but shipping was heavy on these heads. I guess I can count on heavy castings but Ill see when I get them.

Not a bad price, I'd worry about the 76cc chambers though. Exhaust valve could probably use a helper.

You planning on doing any work to those heads? Or will you just put them on the motor stock?

Probably stock for now. I dont think I would ever do any kind of work myself on these. Maybe I could send them somewhere to get done sometime in the future. I could see these have plenty of meat and I could probably get a substantial amount of flow if I get them ported. Im thinking of going with a stealth ram setup.

My recommendation is to hang out where the racers in your area hang out and ask around as to which shop they like to use. If you get a bunch of racers all recommending one shop, then chances are, you've found the place to getthe work done. I live in New York City so the closest place I have to get machine work done that's highly recommended is at least an hour drive away out in Long Island.

I talked to some dyno shops and they said when they swapped these heads for the original heads on a ZZ4 they made the same power. He said when they ported the heads the engine made 390 hp. Thats slightly better than the GM fastburn 385 crate.

I started porting these heads tonite. For a starter head they seem pretty good. The ports are done real well and have very minimal rough edges that wouldnt take much to smooth out. I did some measurements of the inside throat area and found it was quite small. While the port height was bigger than stock the port width was much smaller in the throat area but it seemed it had a much better port design. The only good thing is I started to port them and opened the throat area quite a bit and seems like I have plenty of material in the pinch area and the inside wall. It looks as the pushrods are machined slightly pushed out a bit to allow for more porting on the pushrod pinch area. Once you cut into the pinch area I noticed it opens the heads quite a bit right into the pockets something I dont see with stock heads..
