Timing the Engine

My smog test showed that I'm 6 degrees ATDC. My shop manual says to unplug the harness that goes from the distributor to the ECM then set the timing. The problem is the engine won't run worth a damn when I unplug it. It's almost impossible to start. Can I unplug the harness after I start the engine? Could I get Zapped (shocked) if I did that? Do I have to disconnect the ECM to get the correct timing?

Yes you can unplug it after it's running, and yes you need to disconnect it to get the correct timing.
